Don't worry, full write up will be made late summer early fall when the swap is finished. I've found the available information to be a little lacking in certain details and I'd like to make a really detailed write up to better explain all of the nuances of the swap.

Between you guys helping me in this thread and emailing Lucky I've got most of hard stuff figured out. A few hardware questions remain, however. First up is a question about the leather shifter cover and the center console trim.

In this diagram parts 3 and 4 seem to hold the leather cover down. If I get part # 4 can I use my existing center console (part # 3)?

I'm also doing a manual swap on my car and so far I've got the manual shifter+ cables installed in the car and the trans bolted to the engine and both engine and trans are going back in as soon as I get my new motor mount. What I did for the center console is cut the #4 piece all the way towards the windows switches from the donor car then trimmed it to look like the #3 piece then stuck it under.. though the donor car where I got my parts from came with a rubber shift boot instead of leather so it might be different..

Good to know. Thanks for the tip. My swap is temporarily stalled as a result of my R&D funding running out.

I have most of the major parts. I still need the clutch and pressure plate and I'm still looking for confirmation as to whether there was a definitive difference between the turbo and NA clutches what the respective part numbers are.

Hopefully next spring I can actually make some headway.

The flywheel bolts allegedly require a 12 point 17mm torx or triple square bit. As far as I can tell that tool simply doesn't exist. Does anyone know where to get it or another way to install the flywheel bolts?

My flywheel bolts came off and went on with a standard 12 point socket but, as I recall, it was a SAE size that actually fit well but I can't remember the size.

I was planning on doing a writeup on the clutch change and I took a bunch of notes along the way but after the project drug on for a couple of months due to my work schedule and crappy weather I quit taking notes and pictures and just got the car running again. I doubt I can find the notes but I will look.

Some of the flywheel bolts may be different, post a picture of your bolts.

These are the bolts I got with my M56. The left one is a flywheel bolt the right is a pressure plate bolt.

These pressure plate bolts have a 6 point 18mm head. I was going to replace all of these with new ones but all of the new bolts I found online require a triple square 17mm bit which is impossible to find.

16 and 18mm triple square are common but no set that I've found includes a 17mm.

Hello all. I've got two brief questions.

First off, this cable that attaches to the base of the automatic shifter runs up and behind the dash somewhere. What do most people do with it when swapping over to the manual? Leave it in? Remove it completely? If it should be removed where does it terminate in the dash?

Second, I'm unsure of the orientation for the brake/clutch pedal assembly. Since the pedals can rotate freely around their axis I'm not sure which way the assembly should be installed. Does this look correct or is it upside down?

After searching for a long time I finally found this picture:

In it you can barely see that the end of the spring that attaches to the clutch pedal itself has some kind of plastic clip. Any ideas on a part number or where I can source that clip from?
