2000 S70 Lug Nuts Coming Loose

Post by Eddienorgard »

Hello! Having something weird happen with my driver side front tire. I switched around tires on my car after having a blown out tire replaced. (switched the tires to have the newest wheels in the front and older wheels in the back). I did all the tire changes myself. After driving for about 40+ miles a violent shaking was coming from my front driver wheel. When I checked the lugs, they were COMPLETELY loose. Almost ready to fall out, loose. Pretty scary because If i had driven a little more the wheel would have fallen off most likely!! I tightened the lugs and after driving another 40+ miles the shaking came back! Checked the lugs again, they were loose! Why is this happening?? All the other wheels were changed at the same time but none of them are experiencing this issue! Any ideas?? My only guess is that I had once asked a garage to make sure I could loosen the lugs on this specific wheel after being forced to bring the car to this garage after I could not get the lugs out. It appears that this grey grease was applied to the lugs... Maybe this is it? But looking for any sort of advice or experience with this issue!

Maybe there is antisieze on the threads. Pull then one by one and clean them with brake parts cleaner. Also spray the hub threads clean. Then turque them down and check them over the next few hundred miles.

I have used anti-seize for 30 years with none of these issues.

Check the threads on the lugs and the hub side, perhaps some threads are stripped from over-tightening in the past?

What should I do if the threads are stripped?

In most cases where the threads are stripped one can remove the lugs and fit new ones to the hubs.
They have splines (tapered?) which are fitted via the rear face of the hub and pull up tight when torqued up with the wheels fitted.

I have anti-seize on my bolts and no problem with it.
Just make sure that you torque them good and re-check with wheels on the ground.

Are you sure there are no replacement lug bolts with the wrong cone angle?
Compare the left front set with one removed from another position w/o the problem.
