Need Opinion on two 850's

Post by Italiano86 »

Hey guys, I'm still hunting around for that perfect 850 in my area. I found these two amazing looking 850's the other day and was wondering what you guys think about them, as far as pricing goes and anything else to watch out for.

97 T-5http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/car/289043288.html
96 R http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/car/288188997.html

I was talking to my mechanic the other day and he said the main thing to watch out for in these cars is the transmission, which is a lot to repair and goes bad around 70-90k miles, what's your opinion on this? Any other opinions you guys may have would be great, thanks!

Price is too high on T-5, R link is gone . . . If you are paying that much make sure you are getting all records of maintanace; Timing belt, transmission flushes, ECC, oil leaks, rear main seal, or anything seller will disclose. Looks like it is in good shape though. Ask the seller why they are letting it go . . .

i think the R is priced too high also. for that money you could find a real nice regular 850 turbo or even a 98-2000 v70 R (coolest wagons on the planet!).

as far as the transmission goes.. they are expensive and you can't go to the local transmission shop to get 'em rebuilt. it has to be a volvo factory rebuilt tranny... or a used one.
try to drive a bunch of cars and just walk away from anything that feels or shifts funky. there are a lot of cars in your area to choose from.
..especially in that price range.

Well, you're wrong.
It depends on the R
Mine (with 69K miles, looks more or less like that only better) would cost you a heck of a lot more, but it's 100% original, (never painted anywhere) had about 6K worth of work (maintenance AND mods) last spring and is just plain perfect, not to mention faster than stink and handles VERY well  That one does look very nice and if it's as good mechanically as it looks, easily worth the money.
You also won't find a 2000 V70R for that kind of money, not with low miles and as perfect as my wife's 58K mile 2000 R)

yeah, i guess it depends on it's history. i just have an image in my mind of some kid doing big burnouts in his dad's red 850R. of course i can tell that just by looking at the ad

The T-5 sold in less than two days. I'll just keep hunting around for a good deal. The good news is that I found an awesome volvo mechanic in my area with tons of experience, he used to repair volvo's for 22 years. I'm gonna head out to his house tomorrow and he's gonna help me install a whole audio system into my older 240 for free. 8) I'm hoping that he can kind of tutor me in car repairs, because I'm getting sick of paying for regular repairs, haha.
