I bought the car used in 2013, and it has always started immediately (first crank) with vigor. Only in the last couple of months as I've been wrestling with the voltage regulator has the starter taken a few cranks to start the engine. I attributed that to the weaker charge left on the battery from the pesky VR. Looking online at others' posts I came to understand that a volvo needing a couple seconds to crank to life is not an uncommon thing.

I think I would try new cables before the starter.

When we are talking about this topic, I also have a related question:

I have an s70, you turn the key, it runs.
And an 850 T5-R, here I have to let the starter run for 5 sec or so until the engine engages, also the starter motor sounds to me like it is turning the engine a lot slower then in the s70.
Worn out starter motor? The 850 has about double the milage, battery is ok.

The 95 850 T5-R has Motronic 4.3 engine management, so it will always require more cranks to start, that is normal. The S70 is 4.4 which fires up more quickly. But 5 seconds is too slow, it should be more like 2 or 3. Assuming the ignition parts are in good shape (cap, rotor, wires) I would start by inspecting all of the battery, alternator and starter cables, including the grounds. For example, both my 95 and 96 850 have had issues in the last year of the positive cable end heating up due to hidden corrosion inside the crimp connection.

For those with some cash, the brand-new (not rebuilt) Bosch Starter is still available.
It is Bosch 0 001 108 166, and is "only" $380...lol.
Funny enough this is sold by the same seller who also sells the infamous ebay heater core (for $40).

On the same topic, has anyone used this brand sold by "RareEletrical" for $70. It is brand-new for a $70 starter, so I think it is likely Chinese bearings, solenoids etc. (not necessarily bad, but just saying it...):

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. I will look into the cabling and maybe get a spare used starter sometime. Ignition is completely new, plus refurbished injectors etc (as near stage 0 as I'm going to get). I'm not worried yet, it always starts - it's just something I would like to improve.
