I have attached a couple of photos:
1. the installed tensioner with pin yet to be pulled
2. looking at timing belt from above after it was installed/routed around/between pulleys/gears
3. and for what it's worth, a pic of the bottom of the crankshaft pulley/gear with timing belt properly installed!!

Hi,
I saw a really good video on changing the TB on You Tube the other day when i was looking for other info about my 1998 v70. It shows in detail how to replace it and issues with the tensioner. The guys name was "Robert DIY" who posted it, so you'll have to search. If you cant find it i'll search too again.
Search phrase: "volvo v70 timing belt replacement"
Push the car into the driveway and then work on it, get help pushing if you need it.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
1998 v70, non turbo, FWD, base model, on the road from April 2nd, 2015 to July 26, 2023.

Hi,
I was able to reassemble everything, including the tensioner and timing belt; did the 2-revolution test on the crankshaft, marks lined up, filled the coolant reservoir a few times.
Upon turning the ignition key, the car almost catches, but does not. It turns over like it did before I replaced the timing belt and water pump. I am bummed
I think a compression test might be in order.
Think I will have a friend turn the ignition key and look under the hood to see if things that are suppose to move do so.
If you have any suggestions that I might want to consider, please reply! Thanks!

That was actually expected given the circumstances. I wouldn't pay anyone for a compression test since you already know what it will tell you. The next step is to remove the head or start shopping for a replacement engine.

Hi,
Wow, i hate to agree with bad news but it does not sound very good. I re-read your first post and i see that the timing belt came off while driving. That means that there is a chance that the exhaust valves bent, and possibly dug into the pistons. From what i have read so far on this vehicle, often the pistons dont get fatally damaged but the exhaust valves do. If one is open when the piston comes up it bends the valve (i guess the valve stem) and it has to be replaced. To replace it, at the least the head would have to be removed.
If you got lucky and it did not bend a valve stem, then as long as the new belt was replaced properly it should work. If you have access to an endoscope you might be able to stick it in somewhere to inspect the pistons, at least that's the way you can do it on some cars, but you could look into this as that might tell you if there was any valve damage before taking the head off.
I've never done this on this car so i dont know for sure though if the endoscope works on this engine, so you'd have to find that out first. But it would be one way to explore the possibility that a valve did not get bent, but again you'd have to be lucky because the timing cycle would have to have been just right to avoid that, and i dont know what the odds are of that.
In any case, i really wish you the absolute best of luck...i know this kind of thing can be very disappointing.
Just in case you pull the head and do the work yourself, i would suggest that you read up on this intensely. I only did one engine breakdown in my life, and there are some little tricks you have to know like numbering the (good) valves so you get them back into the same place. From what i understand these engines have 20 valves. Same with the rings and pistons, if you have to go that far.
Also, from what i understand it is much better to have a shop do the head after you take it off then to do it yourself. I did mine myself a long time ago on a different car (V8 engine), and it took a couple weeks and wasnt as good as it could have been if it was done by a shop.
I am still learning about this car and engine myself.

Thank you for all your thoughts and suggestions!
I did remove the cylinder head and have found evidence of a bent valves (still trying to figure out how to post photos to my replies). I have not gone much farther than this, however.

The valves are definitely bent. It may just be the lighting and some oil reflecting but the first picture looks strange, like the top of the head between the intake and exhaust valve is melted or something. If it is really like that then I don't think the head can be salvaged.
