V70 rattle of interior tailgate trim

Post by sanfelice »

I'm speaking of the trim around the perimeter of the tailgate on the interior, around the speakers and the tailgate. I have a bunch of rattles where the trim is no longer tight and I am unsure how I could get it tight again, as there is no way to secure this outside of gluing the whole mess (somehow) to the sheetmetal, and even then, I don't think that is feasible.

Any hope of alleviating this rattling?

IPD sells a nice repair kit for this. The plastic thread clips break, so you have to replace them with metal to fix this.

IPD sells a kit (or used to, I couldn't locate it today) but you can find these on eBay or elsewhere on the web by searching something like 'Volvo tailgate repair' or etc.

A previous owner installed one of these kits on my 850 wagon but I was unimpressed: the sheetmetal gussets that you screw on are thin so eventually they pucker (from momentum of the panel as you close the tailgate) where the clips slip it and the rattle recurs. In my case, even though the sheetmetal was thin, it acted like a washer so the panel didn't fit tight to the body anymore. I eventually installed several strategically-placed sheetmetal screws (being REALLY careful about length and where I drilled) with trim-colored plastic caps to conceal the screw heads.

Repair kit usually works just fine

Hello there,

It is interesting that this issue came up here because mine fell off the other day and i had to push it back on and it seemed to snap back into place. I thought i saw a missing screw too, so i'll have to check that out better once i get past all the really important stuff.
I can see that the reason it falls off is because of the door coming down and then stopping abruptly when it reaches the fully closed position. That would mean the harder we slam the door the more force that trim will experience, so the key is to close the door softly and maybe sure up the trim with some extra hardware. I'll have to look at this better though.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

This is NOT the tailgate, but the interior body trim around the tailgate on the body itself. If you take off the speaker (if you have one) you will notice the clips with metal on them that hold the speaker and the trim together. This area of trim is very weak. Short of gluing this to the sheet metal somehow, is there a way to cure this awful rattle?

Hello again,

Oh ok, i thought you meant the trim on the inside of the door itself because mine came loose the other day.
As to the other, i havent gotten that far with my car yet.

Around the rear speaker areas: I used silicone caulk a bit here and there and let it cure for a day.

Silicone caulk is what I thought of, too, but wasn't sure I wanted to go all in like that. But I may have no choice!

It's getting rid of one nasty rattle at a time that will allow me some sanity.

you need some clips if its the thin plastic strips that mold around the trunk area
