2001 v70 2.4t. Rod bearings
2001 v70 2.4t. Rod bearings
I started up my car at work and it shut off after about 30 seconds. I had plenty of gas. So I started it again, this time with a screeching. I waited a few minute then I started again. This time with a loud knocking sound. I made it home going 20 mph and I'm scared to death. This was 2 weeks ago and since then I had a guy come look at it. He said its the rod bearings. I'm good with cars but I have no idea about these. All I know is I need them replaced. So the price ranges from $50-$300 for new ones. Which should I go for? I honestly have no idea. This is my first Volvo and I love it. Volvo is probably the only car I'll ever drive. ANY help is appricaited! A similar situation with your resolution. Thanks!

Any lights on the dash display? Was the temperature gauge sitting at 12h all the way? How is the oil level (on the engine's dip stick)? Was the loud knocking sound present all the way back home?
Was the engine shaking when you heard the loud sound? It could be a coil plug/spark plug/clogged injector
The gas gauge on this car is more like the weather forecast, I just had mine jump from empty to 1/3 full yesterday.

Check engine light (was on before though), airbagiin NOTIFICATION CENTER, no oil pressure light (only when warm except for about 2 days before the knocking. (called a volvo dealer they said it was ok and not to worry) the vehicle has about 181,135 miles on it and hasnt been serviced since 130,000ish. the knocking sound was there the whole way home. the mechanic came to look a few days later and still knocked. then the same a few days after that. i purchased the vehicle used and it then sat 4 months then we jumped it, got a new battery and started it weekly but didnt drive it for 2 more months. i started driving it 6 months to the day since we had gotten it. where i live traffic is crazy so to get out of my neighborhood i have to hit the gas pretty good. it takes a second to go. ive done some research. could it be the ETM?

50000 miles between oil changes? That is about 7 oil changes overdue.the vehicle has about 181,135 miles on it and hasnt been serviced since 130,000ish.
Rod bearings are internal engine parts which will cost 2000 to replace for parts and labor, plus fixing what ever else is wrong.
The oil light coming on 2 days before was a bad omen.

For such a job I'd go OEM, however in this case it won't be only con-rod bearings. At a minimum you'll be replacing crank bearings, examine crank for wear, piston wrist pin wear or con-rod bushing, bore wear, etc.
