Here are some new pics of the valve seats after cleaning up each section. I think the black gunk that Lee saw thinking it was maybe a burnt section of the head between the valve seats. What I found is a lot of burnt oil deposits that came off with some cleaning. Nonetheless, let me know what you think - appreciate any suggestions or thoughts! Thanks!
One more note:
On cylinder 5 there is what looks like a section of the head that appears raised - it is very slightly, seems to be a small section of the head that may have been formed when the motor was cast.
Cleaned around the valve seats with some GOOP/GOJO and a nylon brush rinsing the brush with hot water in between each cylinder.

It looks OK after the oil got cleaned up.
Are you going to swap the valves out yourself or have a machine shop do it? If you do it yourself be sure to lap the new ones in with compound. I use the dye when I lap them in so that I know the seal will be good. I would also replace all of the stem seals and the guides, even if that valve isn't bent.

Thanks Lee!
I thought I would attempt the valve replacement and lapping myself, and order a gasket kit that contains the stem seals and guides. I will be back to report how I have done with all that in a few days. What kind of dye have you used or recommend?

I'm trying to remember, I think it was a Permetex product. I got the dye at the same time I bought the lapping compound and I'm pretty sure I got them both at NAPA.

"Robert DIY" is our very own "rspi" on this site, and without him and his videos I would have pushed my car off a bridge a long time agoMrAl wrote:Hi,
I saw a really good video on changing the TB on You Tube the other day when i was looking for other info about my 1998 v70. It shows in detail how to replace it and issues with the tensioner. The guys name was "Robert DIY" who posted it, so you'll have to search. If you cant find it i'll search too again.

Greetings all...
I have been attempting to remove a cylinder head at the salvage yard and after going through a few sockets, finally found some deep well impact sockets that would fit into the holes for the head bolts (gosh those holes are small)!
Well, I was able to remove 11 of the 12 head bolts, but the head on the 12th head bolt stripped on me. Now, I am stuck; not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Drill the head off the bolt, take a chisel and hammer to it???? Thanks for your replies!
Thank you to abscate for the new reference to this growing project..
Mileage on my '98 V70 is 322,6xx miles (not kilometers)!

Hey 5rivers: If the break in your case is way up near the head surface, you should be able to lift the head off now, then just use vise-grips on the bolt after "waking it up." It may be easy anyway, now that the tension is gone. The head is not threaded, only the block is.
