anti-lock service required/anti-skid temporaily off

Post by ragtopgto »

on my '05 XC90 I am gettingt this message intermittently. While it was in getting the transmission, radiator an lines replaced(yes a T6 under 100k) Volvo paid all but $700(diagnostic), I had them read the codes for the ABS.
They were BCM-0133 and BCM-0070. The latter meaning the module. Is there a way to get a used one and get it to work or am I going to have to "COUGH" up $1700 plus to get that module and pressure Sensor replaced by Volvo?

After the repair the check engine light came on and new codes came up about O2 sensors. They will be looking into that one since those were not there prior to the tranny repair.

Any suggestions on the ABS?

Thanks
Keith

I had the same thing happen on my 2005 XC90 with V8 engine and just repaired it myself after much websurfing. Total cost $225.00. Volvo dealer wanted about $2,500.00 just for the Brake module part and install. Also, the check engine light came on and the dealer said it was the cat converter (back passenger side) and they wanted $1,900 for the part plus install.

On the internet go to youtube and search for "Volvo abs module removal and replace". A video on a S80 will come up. Good basic instructions but there were differences on my XC90. This is what worked for me:

1. You need to know the serial number on your ABS brake module existing unit to get a matching salvage unit so you don't have to mess with the software. Easiest way to get your serial number is to remove the air filter box (see video but instead of clips there are torx screws). Then use your smart phone and stick it under the ABS brake module and take a pic of the bottom. I used my galaxy sIII on front camera mode was able to position it by viewing the screen and got a good pic of the serial number. I then called Erie Vo Vo, gave them the number and they shipped me a salvaged part for $225(complete unit with brake line box and top part you probably only need bottom ABS brake module as shown in the video but Erie sells the entire part which comes with lifetime warranty).

2. Received the Part in 2 days and then installed. Took about 90 minutes as I carefully viewed the video a couple of times and figured out where the ABS fuses were. Be sure to either remove the fuses as I did (two in the engine bay fuse location and one in the fuse location under the steering column - see owner's manual). You could also disconnect the battery but then you probably have a lot of resets to do and you could ruin the CD player (as my Volvo dealer caused before). Removing the three fuses worked for me.

3. My ABS brake module had three torx bolts holding it on (not 4 as in s80 video). I had to remove them first (not the electrical connector as in the video as the connector is different). Then I removed the electrical connector. The upper part of the electrical connector rotates up and over the left side of the connector after you loosen a couple of small catches located about 2/3rds of the distance from the left side of the connector - this was the hardest thing to figure out during the install. My 23 yr old daughter figured this out - she is a very handy mechanic and has two project cars (both BMW e30 conv) that run & she is restoring.

4. After that it's all uphill and an easy reassembly. Clean the inside of the air box and especially the mass air flow sensor and all connections as I did and hopefully your "check engine soon" light will also go away as mine did.

I did this about a week ago and the "anti-lock service required"; "anti-skid temporarily off"; and the "check engine soon" lights have all been eliminated. Good luck.

By the way, when these warning lights first appeared on my xc90, the dealer advised me to have my battery checked since it was the original battery. The battery tested fine but the dealer wanted to replace it anyway in order to "eliminate the possibility" of bad battery. I asked if they had to have an alarm reset code or any special thing to do to prevent any issues on the car, they said no. Had the battery replaced. Codes didn't go away AND when I turned on the CD player the CD player destroyed itself and three of my cd's. Internet search then showed (euro forums) that when replacing the battery this is a common occurrence and advised to take out fuses on cd player. Volvo dealer wanted about $1,000 to replace CD player and refused to take any responsibility. So that's why I took out the fuses when doing the ABS brake module. I also replaced the CD player myself but that's another story.

Hope the brake module repair solves your issues.

I have the same problem, but my 4 way flashers are also flashing at the same time. Is this a common problem with the ABS Switch?

Thanks for the feed back and lead on a place to purchase the module. I have not yet got to the project but am glad I don't have to have the dealer code the module like they said they would have too if I got a used one. I printed this and put in my Volvo folder for future reference.

Thanks
Keith

I did try to repair the module and it appeared to be OK for about a week after the repair attempt, then just the anti-skid warning came back, went back off for a few days, then both abs service and anti-skid are back on again. I have not gotten back in there to clean the ABS sensors on the wheels but the codes I got were the same as before so probably not gonna be the sensors.
