Electrical 92 740 wagon

Post by dw601 »

Hello again.
I am "Stumped".The other day i was relocating alot of excess old inventory form my shop,to my storage shop at the house. My 740 wagon is sometimes my truck.lol
Now I had the thing "loaded down good",lots of smaller stuff on top of larger stuff. You get the idea, packed in as much as possible.

While I was on the interstate highway, the thing started cutting off.Like I was turning the key off and switching it back on.This would happen about every 20 seconds or so.I pulled off the next exit, and while sitting there wondering what the heck was going on.I noticed while the car was at idle.that it made no difference whether It was idleing or trying to accelerate it was the same.
Now I turned everything off,and heard someting ticking in relation to the cutting off.I then shut it off and pulled the ashtry, and sure enough there was a breaker in there that was clicking. When I felt the breaker, man it was red hot.
I let the car sit for a few minutes, then restarted,it didnt take long for the breaker to heat up again. When the breaker opend up to reset, the car monentarily shut off and on.
Now with the thing fully loaded,I was beginning to think I was gonna be stranded again.Although it would still run fine untill it heated up,I made it to an autoparts store.
I know this was a far ereach, but I went in and get a new 30amp breaker)Same rating) and put it in.It worked, switched off once, then cooled down and has been fine every since.
Now with the history out of the way. Here is the outcome.I dont have any power windows from the drivers side. The only window that works now is the passenger front, and it only operates with it's own switch.None of the other windows work niether by the drivers switches or thier own switch for that door window.
I looked at the breaker, and sure enough it is for the power windows #8 I think, car isnt here at the moment.
I have to assume that something had fallen onto one of the door switches and held it down maybe.

Would anyone have any idea what may have burnt out,to disable all the windows in this way? And could someone explain to me what would have happend to cause the window breaker to cause the eingine to mementarily shut off like that?

The windows now not working is my main concern though.

As I have gotten much need help here in the past, due totaly to the great people here.I thank you in advance for looking at my post, and for any and all replies

its your switch .. the multi switch for your windows.. it must have grounded.

Your passenger window will work because it has a different power source than your drivers and rear windows.

I also am unclear what was heating up..which relay was it? You dont mean the breaker for the fuel pump do you?

well if that fuse is going .. then my guess would be you got a major short in the drivers side door.. perhaps the motor is going. Why not try isolating the drivers door switch.. use one of the other switches from the back and connect it to the switch on the front left and see if it causes the relay to click.. if thats not it.. try the back doors.

Either the drivers door motor, master door switch on the drivers armrest or one of the wires are shorting out to the system.
