Misha, I have done this to bleed the system.
My question remains... How do I test to see that the steering U joint is the issue NOT the rack?

Ok,just wanted to be sure because a lot of people don't know how to properly bleed steering system. 
'97 850 2.5 20v / fully equipped / Motronic 4.4 from the factory / upgraded with S,V,C,XC70 instrument cluster / polar white wagon

hi PresseR, you have to jack up the front of the car so the steering gear is not under load. Disconnect the u-joint/coupling and check it for binding. It should be loose to firm, if it's tight or binding it's junk. They do go bad, not too hard to change.
