1997 Volvo 850 non-turbo Running Rich

Post by gowa_goes »

Hi All -

My 97 850 non-turbo appears to be running rich. There's a smell of fuel coming from the exhaust. The engine is running pretty smoothly (maybe a tiny bit rough?), the tach is stable, acceleration and shifting seem fine, and gas mileage is at about 24 mpg in mostly highway driving. I only noticed the smell after installing this tune-up kit, and for what it's worth I'm a novice mechanic:

All info I find pairs running rich with rough idle, poor mileage, or other issues that I don't seem to have. I checked the spark plug wires and plugs and everything is where it should be (though I haven't checked the distributor). Any ideas what's up?

Thanks for any help!

Best,
Steve

The main indicator that car is running rich is black smoke from the exhaust and abnormal fuel consumption.
