'95 850 - Coversion from Euro 7 pin round to US 4 flat

Post by surelyujest71 »

My 850 Estate has the factory Volvo receiver hitch, as well as the factory 7 pin round plug for the trailer lights. I've managed to rig a working method of adapting the hitch so it'll work with a standard class 3 trailer hitch, but simply cannot find the correct 7 to 4 adapter so I can plug in the trailer lights. I read somewhere that for the 4 way flat, the car has to have a special box installed to keep from showing a lights error on the dash, and am not sure if my car will have that, since it's got the 7 way connector.

Does anyone know where to get hold of the correct Euro 7 round to US 4 flat adapter for my Volvo? I saw one on a website that looked tempting, but it was labeled as being for the Land Rover http://www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Tow-Ready/118710.html, so I don't know if it'll work correctly (i.e. keep error codes from coming up) on my 850.

Here are some pics of what I've got, including my receiver-adapter fix:

(this is my first time to try to share photos on a forum from my google photos, but if they didn't load, at least the link to those photos should let you see them.)

I used a length of 1 1/2 inch box tubing to adapt the hitch and receiver together. It fits nicely inside of both the Euro receiver and the US class 3 hitch component. It sticks slightly further out behind the car than I'd prefer, but it'll tow my flatbed with the riding mower on it quite nicely.

Here's hoping someone has info on the wiring adapter I need. And... Thanks.

Try U Haul. They list adapters specifically for several German makes but not speciofically Volvo. My guess is that the Volvo is compatible with the German makes although U Haul doesn't specifically list Volvo on the chart.

Where in Missouri are you? If you are around the Kansas CIty area Croft Trailer pretty much has everything.

Rolla. We do have a local U Haul place, so maybe they'll have something. From the sound of it, though, the Land Rover connector is just as likely to work, being a "Euro" 7 pin.
