2007 S80 Occupancy Weight Sensor

Searched, a few others have had this problem, though not a lot. "SRS Urgent Service Required" on the dash. Dealer says, "Occupancy Weight Sensor is shot, $2,8000 installed. Thank you for choosing Borton Volvo."

So I read it's a more common problem in BMW and Benz's, though the sensor is not nearly as expensive. A lot of those guys have rigged up a resistor and diode that emulates the OWS. I'd much rather do that, but does anyone know what I need? I don't have a healthy OWS to test with but I'd think someone here has done this!!???

Aren't they just going to tell me to get it fixed at the dealer? They're certainly not going to help me bypass something in the airbag system.

I have no idea what they will say but they aren't psychic and do not know you have an issue that they might offer assistance for. The first thing that mfr customer assistance asks is if you have had it checked by the dealer. You have and the dealer did not offer help so you call. If they say no then you've only wasted the time the call takes. You might mention that you are aware that BMW and some others have extended warranties on these same parts due to premature failures.

If you can get details on that resistor/diode circuit and connection to ows connector, give it a shot and see if message goes out - stating the obvious... Post here as well.

Believe me I'd post back. I always do no matter what I fix. Just doesn't seem like many Volvo guys have dug into this. The problem doesn't seem too common on Volvos, but their whoopee cushion sensor design is gawd-awful expensive and unnecessarily complicated.

Go it now. I unplugged the sensor, contacts looked brand new but I sprayed contact cleaner on them anyway. The hose from the whoopee cushion was pulled back a little from the sensor. I pushed it back on by about another 1/8 inch. It's a tight fit.

After doing both of those, the "Passenger Air Bag Disabled" light in the sunroof panel came on when no one was sitting there, goes out when you sit down. Seemed like progresss.

Went to the other Volvo dealer here in town today. He turned off the air service bag urgent error, said there were no other codes and it stayed off now. So when the dealer tells you the only fix is a $2,800 sensor, do what I did. Apparently if you can get the "Passenger Air Bag Disabled" light in the sunroof panel came on, you might just need a reset of the air bag warning.
