1998 v70 Do they make a Haynes manual for this car?

Post by MrAl »

Hi,

Do they make a Haynes manual for a 1998 v70 ?
The Chilton manual is not very good.

Thanks...
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Here you go:

Don't expect anything earth shattering though. If it's anything like the one for my 850, it's mediocre at best.

Not worth the paper it's printed on. Guaranteed, the info you'll get here is more comprehensive.

Yeah the Chilton's was always my last choice as far as manuals go. Now it seems I rarely refer to manuals, as there are so many great on-line resources with pics. Manuals are handy for summarizing torque specs/sequence, wiring diagrams, and things of that nature though.

Hello again,

850:
Thanks for the link, i could have sworn i checked Amazon but i guess i didnt or didnt find it when i did look.

ES:
That's what most of the reviewers seem to be suggesting too. "Mediocre" is a word that keep coming up when talking about the Haynes manual.
I had a Haynes for my 1988 Hyundai, and it wasnt "too bad" so i thought this might be similar, but it sounds worse.

renns:
Yes i have that manual and i dont like it at all. I dont like the content, the cheap drawings, the layout, even the paper is just a small step up from the Sunday newspaper paper.
I think the problem here was that they tried to fit too many models into a book that should have covered just one single model like the v70, while it tried to cover the 240, 740, 760, 780, 860, 940, 960, C70, S70, S90, v70 and v90.
I cant even find the correct text that tells me what the timing belt change interval is for the v70 because they have so many others listed and seem to have forgotten to list the v70. That's just dumb.

ALL:
But what is this "Shop Manual" they all seem to be talking about, like it's the Bible for the Volvo? Can we get one for any Volvo like this 1998 v70?

You should be able to get a copy of VADIS and print out the work instructions you need.

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/vadis-faq.html

Might be a bit of a bear trying to get it up and running on a newer computer. I've never needed it - the instructions on the 'tubes, and here in particular, are great.

There was no North American version of the P80 70 series manual from Haynes as far as I know. I have seen a British version and actually downloaded it but it was largely the same as the 850 manual with the British English much thicker.

Haynes is a tool in the tool kit, just like the 850 factory manual, just like VADIS/VIDA, just like Alldata. There is no one "perfect manual" that I have found. They all have strengths and weaknesses and they all have errors to one extent or another. The most glaring Haynes error is the incorrect location of the ignition wires on the distributor. The 850 factory manual has the location of the number one cylinder correctly identified on the distributor but the rotation is backwards.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I had purchase something called "Volvo Service Manual" from eBay a while back, and it might be VADIS but im not sure now. How would i know it it was or not? In one place it says it gives VADIS information but it seems quite limited in scope. I found some things but not other things. For example, there is NO information on the automatic transmission shifter mechanism, and i tried different engines and stuff like that for a good hour or two.
Can this be a knocked down version of VADIS?
Can someone possibly supply a link to the correct version?
Can we get it directly from Volvo?

Back in the 1990s when the 850, S70/V70 came out, this Haynes manual was a bit useful.
Now, with all the DIYs in different forums, this Haynes manual is close to obsolete.
The only thing I use it for is Torque Values, even so, you can find them in forums.

I've got the Haynes manual linked above - like everybody else says, there's nothing in it you can't find online but I find that it's nice to have around for quick reference while working on the car (mine is a '99 V70 T5). I keep it in the driver's seatback pocket. Hopefully my kids will flip through it and learn a thing or two about cars like I did looking through my dad's stack of Haynes manuals growing up :)
