2001 V40 4th gear flare and delay when going to drive

Post by Skeletor »

I have recently replaced the B4 servo cover, and just flushed the transmission. I notice some improvement in all other gears (they seem to be working normally). However I definitely have a flare when the transmission shifts from 3rd to 4th, and also when going from 5th back to 4th. I also have a noticeable delay when going in to drive (reverse has no delay). So I am wondering what you think. I am thinking that I have a solenoid that needs to be replaced in the valve body??? Not sure if the valve body is the issue, but I am inclined to doubt that. But I am open to suggestions. I was wondering about the transmission control module needing to go through adaptation. I have made a few calls and have been told it does not have a computer so it does not have an adaptation feature. Not sure if that is correct information or not.

I've also been wrestling with transmission issues on my '01 S40 lately.

Are you sure the fluid level is correct? I haven't had a delay issue in the S40, but did have delay when shifting into gear from P or N on a '95 850. Turned out the problem was that it was down a pint of fluid. Was surprised that that little amount could cause an issue, but it did clear the problem.

When you check the level, be sure the transmission is hot - like driven for at least a half-hour hot. And check on a level surface. It's kind of a pain to read the dipstick.

I also have heard that you do not need to reprogram anything when changing the TCU on a 2001 S40.
