I'm going with the coward's fix -- replacing with a PnP stalk -- and skipping all the diagnostics. I can't imagine it is anything other than the switch and if it isn't as simple as the switch, it is unlikely I will pay anyone to fix it. That having been said, I think the PnP trip is going to get postponed until the end of May/early June. I'll report back on results of the swap, but it will be a while. Thanks to Mike and Steve for all the help.

I noticed on my 1999 today the CRUISE light does NOT come on in position II as a check as Mike said. A burned out CRUISE bulb would be tough to diagnose on this system if the cruise did not work. That being said, since the switch is the only serviceable part, the PnP strategy makes 100% sense.

I wonder if power to the cruise circuit is cut by the ECM when the circuit is not completed by the bulb !!

Just for laughs my cruise bulb DOESN'T light with key in Pos II , but my cruise and bulb work fine when in use. There is however an activation for the cruise bulb in Vida under DIM-Activations

Hmmm..my wiring diagram says the Cruise Light wires to 4/61:12 which is a (CANBUS) module in the trunk.

Evan, take your meter to the JY with you, check stalk before you remove another dead one!

I doubt the JY cars still have batteries in the but hey, you never know.

Just pull the connector and check that Term 1 connects (short, or zero resistance) to Term 2 when you move the switch from OFF to ENERGISE

Pushing + should short terminals 1 and 5
Pushing - should short terminals 1 and 4

Pushing resume should short terminals 1 and 3

No battery in vehicle required.

Grabbed a couple cruise stalks at the PnP recently. One had better paint on the various symbols so I went with that one without any testing. I installed it recently, but only got to road test it today.

Happy to say cruise is again functioning as designed. Steve, you're welcome to one of my spares. Pick it up on your next trip through, or I'll mail it to you.

Great to hear that. Henry and I were chatting recently about how Volvo added the cruise option to P80s.

It is a programming addition to the DIM module and not on ECM as suspected.

This is probably why Vida places cruise light on under Activations-Dimm
