lock up

Post by volvo virgin jinx »

Thanks for the info.

Update:

I figured out how to run the A3 automatic system test on the tranny, via the posted 850 manuals (there on this site somewhere, b4 anyone asks where did I get it). It was a great help, and it affirmed my fear, kinda. When the system tried to activate the torque converter lock up (now, to be safe, it doesn't say specifically if it activates the lockup solenoid, or the actual torque converter), it tried, then a slight burning smell, barely noticeable, came. Tried it twice to be sure. So, the prob is definitly the lockup, but I'm not sure which is worse; the torque converter ($299 and 7 hrs labor, I can pull it myself) or the solenoid. BTW, PnP switch didn't help a bit, couldn't get to this site b4 I went and replaced it :x . I needed one anyways. Bay 13 is amazingly helpful, but when it's 20F outside and you can't feel your fingers, I didn't think the fight with the tranny stick was worth it; I left a lot of stuff in and worked around it, main thing was the air filter. So, I'm stuck with this: get a torque converter, or lockup solenoid, or both, or just c4 the gas tank. Holla!

BTW, no tranny leaks, fluid looks a little darker than normal, but not unusual.

Update: Lo and behold......the car went in reverse as my girl and I was going to push it up the driveways small incline, then went into drive and drove up the hill  . Amazing. Still stuck on what the prob is, trying to figure it out.

I was reading this and trying to figure out code 323. I have been having problems with pnp switch for 2 months, had a new one put in, rechecked alignment, still won't quit flashing so put in a new one again and it still flashes so I checked a1 this morning and got 323. I just got a tranny flush on Mon. Old fluid looked fine, no smell.

Do I need to add oil, if so what kind? Car is running fine. Flashing arrow is driving me crazy!

Probably a silly question but . . .did you cycle through the codes until you get a 1-1-1 back?

No Not a silly question. Tried to do what it said on volvospeed on how to clear them and couldn't get them to 1-1-1. From what I understand(ha)
hold button down for 6-7 sec.----push button for like 1 sec---wait for light and hold down again for 6-7 sec. and then they should be clear. I couldn't get it work. I am getting ready to go back out for another try.

Okay went and did it by the book (chiltons) and I still could not get it to clear. Turned the car off and tried again...no luck. Am I doing something wrong?

323-someone suggested engine speed sensor--could that make the arrow flash?

Thanks

1. keys are in, and on II in the ignition (car not running)
2. jumper in socket A1
3. push black button for 1 sec
4. count led lights as the cycle through
5. push black button 1 sec again to read next code
6. check until a code repeats (all codes read)
7. now do the push for 6-7 sec, release, push 6-7 sec
8. push button 1 sec release
9. code 1-1-1 should now come up

all codes must be read for them to clear, if you turn your car on and are still getting a dash signal your problem may still be present

Hope this clears things up . . .

Nope didn't work. 323 engine speed sensor, is that the same thing as throttle position sensor?

where is speed sensor located on the car?

Thanks for putting up with all my questions,

No, it's not the same...actually there is a transmission speed sensor which causes the engine to run at different speeds as well as a Vehicle Speed Sensor...I'll post both fixes from VADIS below:
