You can get a Dice and have "doublebug" clone your existing ECM. He has done it for me on 2 occasions. You don't need to install Vida. Just need an internet connection and the software he provides.
A used ECM with the same Bosch part number and a removal tool is all you need.

OHHH!!!!! I will check into that! Thanks!!!!
I know everyone is dying for an update so here goes:
Purchased Dice from a supplier off of aliexpress.com for $115. It installed perfectly on my laptop. In working with doublebug, I purchased a used number matching ECU off ebay for $25. He was able to clone the donor ECU and now the temp gauge works, the ECT works, the engine is able to go into closed loop and I see activity on all O2's and no trouble codes. However, the radiator fan does not work, which I expected anyway.
A couple things to note:
> Pin A60 at the ECU is a signal ground (as stated somewhere in here) and should have 0 volts.
> Sometimes, it helps to plug in sensors for them to work.
Thanks to all for the help!!

Glad it worked out. Try doing what you did at the dealer and watch several tens of hundreds disappear. They would insist on new ECM and several hundreds worth of downloads.

I wish I would have seen this thread when you posted this. Avoid this place at all cost, that goes for anybody. ALWAYS Google a business first. You would have been out several hundred dollars plus your ecm.muddblood wrote:So...bad ECU. What options do I have? I know I cannot get a used one and throw it in. Is my best bet here: http://www.volvoecm.com?

Could someone please let me know what ECT means. I am having cooling problems which I will list in another reply.
I love this site, but would be nice if the abbreviations could be somehow explained for us novices.
Thanks!

Hello again, My 2001 S80 t6 cooling fan will turn on with AC on, but not with the engine hot. Had codes read and came up with ECM (engine control module) code 6110, cooling fan relay missing signal. The relay gets it's signal from the violet wire that goes to the ECM. The tech was able to run the fan at both speeds with his computer, so fan is OK.
I am assuming the ECM must get input from somewhere so it know the coolest temp is hot, and inturn send a signal to the relay. Could this input possibly be from the temp sensor in the thermostat housing? I recently changed the thermostat, but not the sensor. any way to test the sensor? Nearest authorized Volvo repair shop is 100 miles away.
The tech who ran the codes suggested I trace the violet wire to the ECM to make sure it is good, but have to get a ECM removal tool to do that. I will also need to know what terminal in the wire harness that plugs into the ECM to test. Have wiring diagram, so might be able to find it there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If ECT is out of range you should get an ECT code.. Alas this isn't the case.
ECT is the coolant temp sensor. There is a table of values here for resisrance of the coolant temp sensor you should be getting. It varies from around 500 ohms at full temperature to over 2K ohms when cold if memory serves right.
Measurement of the sensor should always be done unplugged or out of circuit.

Sorry, I may have hijacked this thread with my 2001 S80 t6 cooling problem. I will try post it in a new thread.
