TPS How to Replace?

Post by carlton »

I have looked all over this site and have yet to find any detailed instructions as to how to replace the TPS?

Let me tell you all why i am going to change the TPS:

1) I get a bit of a lag prior to engaging into gear (first only)

2) this only happens when the car has been driven for a while

3) i have flushed the old fluid, and replaced with new and ther has been no change

4) from what i have read this seems to be a common problem (TPS)

now i will leave it up to the experts.

Thank You all in advance for any input that can be given.

TPS is on the throttle body....

remove the vac tree cover,
release the throttle cable,
unbolt the vac tree mount, (better access to TB)
remove linkage (ball style)
unbolt TB
sensor is plugged in onto the TB (can't miss it)
be sure to use a new gasket for TB upon re-install

The TPS is attached to the side of the throttle body by 2 screws.

Some folks have had success removing it and cleaning it. You might want to try that first before buying a new one.

I would use a contact cleaner on the electrical connector itself and throttle body cleaner on the actual sensor area. Good luck!

I replaced mine recently (got a code it was bad).

I removed the whole TB, imo this was easier than fu**ing with the bolts, and used the opportunity to clean it.

Why do you have to use a new gasket when refiting the TB? I obvoiously used the old one, so far no problem.

I've seen some nasty looking gaskets...all covered with oil....guess that's why. Anyway, this is a "can do" maintenance item....difficulty level isn't that high.

4 - 10 mm bolts,
1- electrical connector
1- 7 mm band clamp on the plastic air intake tube coming from the low pressure turbo
