2003 V70 FWD Fuel Filter - Where is it?

Post by JAB »

Where is the fuel filter for a 2003 V70 FWD, 2.4 non-turbo 5 spd? Dealer sold me a metal canister one, that looks like the one that was on my 1995 850 wagon and as pictured at FCP. There is no filter in the area of the rear passenger side door or RR wheel or in front of the rear axle near rear passenger side door. Fuel line comes out of the front of the gas tank and goes thru a tunnel up to the engine. Joe

Still the canister type...under the gas tank on a braket on the passenger's side.

It is not there. I looked all over and over and over. Again, the fuel line comes out of the front of the fuel tank and goes directly to the engine. It is not like my 850 where the fuel line came out the top of the fuel pump and then down and around. Fuel pump is entirely inside the fuel tank. There is just an access port at the top of the tank. Hope this helps..first the filter and braket...second, a picture of the line coming out of the fuel pump....I assume that there is a cover over the fuel tank that has to come off to see the fuel filter, and then you'll see the retaining bracket and filter. Where you describe is beyond were the fuel filter is on a P2 V70:

If it's not in the location that I mention you might find it by pushing the seat forward, taking the carpet up and looking from the top. Other than what I have posted, I find no other explanation for its location.

Thanks, but mine is different than as pictured. The top of my fuel pump is not exposed as is pictured. The entire fuel pump assembly is completely submerged in the tank. I pulled out the rear seat back, pulled back the carpet/pad and opened up the access port to the tank. It is only an access port, since the fuel pump is not expossed at the top of the tank. Fuel goes to the engine out the front of the tank, not from the top of the tank.

This car was originally sold in Massachusetts and may have a different configuation than for most other states. I noticed that your diagram says to refer to another Figure for cars with Emissions codes C, G, K, L, P, Q, S & U. What does that figure show? Thanks for your help. Joe

Just checked all of the diagrams....the alternative one you mention as well as that for an "R" and they are all the same in regards to the fuel filter....I'm stumped too. You sure you don't have a Canadian model V70? I'll see if I can find the location by checking into some other sites.

If it's the same as the XC 70 then it's in a strange place....I've copied a post over on the XC70.com forum below (I think the poster was being facetious when he said this was a good design.):
Just changed the fuel filter on my 2001 Cross Country V70XC (36K miles.)  Filter is located forward of the rear wheel on the fuel filler (gas cap) side of the car.  It is underneath the floor pan and just inside the outer edge of the body.  One bolt releases the clamp which holds the filter in place, each fuel line connection is removed by hand - no tools!  My connections were covered by some 'masking tape' like protective wraps.  Unwrap the tape, the connecter has a blue plastic 'button' which you press in and pull the connector off.  (I cheated and used the tip of a screwdriver to press in the button.)  Make sure you have a drip pan to catch the gas which will run out.

Hint:  Remove the fuel line connections before removing the clamp bolt - this holds the filter in place while you work.  Loosening the bolt a little will allow you to slide the filter around if you need extra working room.

Slide the clamp around the new filter and bolt it in place.  Install the new filter by just pushing the connectors on the filter end tubes - make sure they click into place.  Make sure you have the flow arrows pointing toward the front of the car!

I was able to re-use the tape wraps, I covered one end with a piece of bicycle inner tube as it had ripped. I used nylon wire ties around both wraps to hold them in place as the tape adhesive will not be that strong after removing.

Hint:  Test run the car before re-wrapping the connectors, look for drips and leaks, make sure you have the flow direction right.

Bravo to Volvo for such an easy maintenance design.

Thanks, but it is not in the XC70 location either. My fuel line comes out the very front of the passenger side of the fuel tank and goes directly forward to the engine. If the filter was to be in-line it would have to be forward of the fuel tank and it is not there, either.

I can not find anything that says it is a Canadian car. The emissions label does say that it is ULEV (lev 1) and that it meets 2003 California emissions and that it meets Canadian emmisions standards. The mystery continues. Thanks. Joe

I found this on Swedespeed:
The fuel filter is located in two different places on S60/V70 models.
If it is FWD then it is just ahead of the RR wheel under the body.
If it is AWD then lay down behind the car and look slight right of center and toward the floor board of the vehicle, it is just above the rear end.
All of my books agree with that location.
