Thanks, clifford06! I used a combination of mean green, simple green, and purple power bought in gallon containers; soaked the head in a large plastic storage bin, and used 4 brass bristled brushes! (Try saying those last three words ten times!) As long as you are patient, your end results should make you proud! Good luck with that.

I am about to give the piston walls another cleaning, but I thought I would ask for recommendations. I know I should not use a scouring pad, or anything abrasive; that leaves me with cotton balls and q-tips! Any particular cleaning agents that folks prefer (aside from acetone)? Appreciate any/all suggestions :)

Just leave the cylinder walls alone. A soft cloth to wipe away any residual oil / coolant.

Thank you, Lee!
I ended up blowing out the cylinder with my leaf blower (after sanding the top portion of the lower engine that the head sits on - there was a dip in the middle) - works really well!!

So, now I am about to move the head from my work station to the motor, and needed to open up a new gasket kit to pull out the head gasket. I will install the rings that are situated around the spark plug holes on the bottom of the head, then install the thermostat and its gasket.

I have new gaskets/seals for each of the camshafts, the intake and exhaust manifolds, the exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe gasket, the gasket for the water pipe at rear of motor. Now I have three seals left that I cannot remember where they sit, one is an o-ring about an inch and a half in diameter, another is a large flat washer-like seal (almost like the one that goes into the oil fill cover) that is two and one-eight in diameter, the third is the same size as the large flat washer-like seal, but has a groove inside of it, like it is supposed to go around something that is thin.

I will attach a pic shortly. Appreciate any/all replies. What I don't want to do is miss something before putting the head on, and end up having to take it off because I could not remember the location of the seals. TIA for your help on this!

In the pic above, the bottom seal with the groove in it, is for the thermostat.

In the pic above, the top seal is the same size as the oil fill cover seal. I am guessing this new seal goes there.
The smaller o-ring's location is still a mystery!

Bottom one looks like a thermostat gasket.

Where are these seals coming from? If you bought some kind of a kit, it is very common for the gasket kits to have extra parts in them.

On the cam seals, Corteco and SKF are known to last a long time and most other brands are known to last very little time at all.

Yes, erikv11, it is a kit; made by Elwis. The camshaft seals do have numbers and capital letters, the two groups of letters are: MFC and TCR (and numbers are 1.750, 2.250, and 0.265, and then a 7) on the larger seals; MFC and SC (numbers are 30, 47,and 19) on the smaller seals, but I am not familiar with TCR or SC, or what they mean. They are, however, the same size seals as those I took off the camshafts.

Just a total WAG but, is the o-ring about the size for the dipstick tube or vacuum tree?
