Greetings. First, I posted last night near 11pm , after a double shift. Around 8 am, I checked and there were responses. Much Respect. 5rivers, you set the bar high with that cleanup/ install.
Precopster ,thanks for the pics. Your cleanup in the second pic is awesome. Also, the use of the Grip Clamp is noted. What was your reason for your rebuild ?
My next question is " Are S70 turbo valves limited to the S70 only ? " Do other Volvo series use the same valves ?

Engines in S70 and V70 are identical. Just make sure you are ordering by engine number or code.
I think turbo vs NA are the only choices.

Actually the first pic is the donor head being robbed of valves and the second is of the head I found in the rear of the V70R last year that had some smashed valves. The head was servicable after about 10 valves were smashed by a seized idler pulley.clifford06 wrote: Precopster ,thanks for the pics. Your cleanup in the second pic is awesome. As I began sanding the bottom of the cylinder head the brownish gasket patterned marks disappeared. Have you checked to see if the bottom of the cylinder head is straight from left to right, front to rear, corner to corner, etc? Use a metal/aluminum straight edge to see if there are any dips where daylight can be seen between the bottom of the straight edge and the topside of the bottom of the cylinder head. If not, you're lucky! If there are dips then I would recommend having it machined. I sanded mine down to .0025 of inch, but it took quite a few days to get there and being overly cautious about not taking too much off.
If 'mean green' or 'simple green' are not working well or quick enough on the cleaning of the cylinder head, try Purple Power, its a slightly stronger degreaser. I picked up a small spray container at Napa.
BTW, the valve spring compressor I got on loan at Advance Auto was cumbersome to use. I would recommend using the type pictured by Mike (precopster).

Greetings. Head is currently soaking in Purple Power. I did the straight ruler test , and saw no daylight.
You say you sanded the head. Did you use the " sand paper glued to a flat surface and slide the head back and forth method. "

Yes, did that initially until there was little daylight, and then turned over the head and sanded with a milled piece of wood with 100 then 120 grade sand paper.

Greetings. Been working OT at work. I've searched around and can find used 2.3 heads from small local yards for $ 225- 250. Tomorrow I'll be going to PNP to check on a 2000 GLT 2.4 vin code "56". Hope the heads in shape . Just need the valves.
I might just order the valve spring compressor from Amazon ($39.99) and pull valves myself. Local machine shop slipped up and told me that they charge $10-15 per valve on swaps. Pull the used myself and save $200-250 in " shop fees " . Thoughts opinions and prayers respected.

As you see then, time is money. Machine shops are THE place for trueing and milling the heads, and doing guides, but you can save yourself quite a bit doing valve and stem seal rmvl & Instl yourself. Get some valve grinding compound and a hand lapper, some news paper to cover the coffee table, and lap all your valves in while you watch TV! then after clean-up,install the seals, then your valves, it takes more than 15 minutes, but you may save more than 15%
Which compressor is that, the one Mike showed in his post?
