Need to replace speedometer on old volvo 740

Hi,

Don't know much about cars, please help...On the 740 we have the odometer stopped working i.e. does not record mileage and stuck at 106,000 also rev counter + fule gauge temperamental. Want to get a second hand one from a breakers yard. I know of another 740 being broken for parts. Is there any easy way of telling if the one we get is the right one for our car, i.e. do we compare engine number or look if car is built the same year. By the way mine is a UK G regesitration plate.

It sounds like in your post that you have 4 devices that aren't working? If that's the case, it might be something besides needing a new dash display. I'm sure someone on the list will be able to give you some clues of what to check.

It is possible that you will have a choice of two instrument panels as they were supplied by Yazaki and VDO. I'm not sure if they are interchangeable.

Going by the VADIS part numbers the Yazaki instrument panel was fitted to 740s from 1984 to 1990 without any change so it should be easy to match that one. The VDO was fitted from 1986 to 1990, again without change but in 1986 and 1987 they produced two different models. The odd one out in both cases has less instruments in it.

The front panel of the cluster should be marked with the maker's name but they can be identified by the mileage trip meter. The Yazaki has 4 figures set out like this 1234. The VDO has 4 figures set out like this 123 4.
