2006 XC90 T6 AWD rear hub / drive shaft

Post by matt_linegar »

Hi, on inspecting the underside of the car today I found that the drive shaft feels very loose (up and down not rotational i.e. not splines) were it is mounted into the hub. There is no play in the wheel bearing, or noise. does the drive shaft sit in another bearing within the back of the hub? I want to be absolutely sure before I splash out on a new hub assembly.

Thanks

Matt

Which hub are you talking about, the fwd. end of the shaft at the angle gear, or the rear, at the viscous coupling? Yes, axial play in a bearing indicates wear. Search the repair database for AWD or drivetrain, specifically angle gear or bevel gear for the front viscous coupling for the rear. Also several write-ups and threads on driveshaft itself.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I'm referring to the left hand side rear transverse drive shaft and the wheel hub.

Finally got round to replacing the hub a few weeks ago. Really easy job :)

Hadn't realised just how much noise it was making, I thought it was still the centre prop making all the noise but I was wrong. It's like driving a new car now :)
