2002 V70 NA AT Shift Points
2002 V70 NA AT Shift Points
My V70 seems to rev pretty high before shifting. When accelerating at full throttle like when merging onto a freeway I've seen it rev up to 6,500 rpms. I've backed off the throttle to make it shift so I don't know how high it will rev on its own. Is this typical? Every vehicle I have had with an automatic transmission always shifted before the engine revved into the warning area on the tach. The engine seems to rev to that point willingly but I'm a bit concerned about having an engine with 165k on it staying together when revved like that. Just wondering if that is typical or if something is amiss with the programming for the transmission.

Willing revving engines these Volvo donks and doing no harm because they are great designs. Mine has almost 330k kilometres.

Don't worry about the red line. The engine could happily stay there for a while giving the oil pressure is within the specs. It's just that is losing power past a point. As for the transmission, indeed it's willing to go as high when it's floored as mentioned and if you release a bit the throttle it will still go there like a happy chap because it was waiting for so long for it. No, seriously, it has a computer that it's managing in such way. If you don't floor it from the start and try to modulate the acceleration, it will upshift much sooner. Sit back and enjoy
