If the evaporator is good (which it seems to be) it could be in a number of areas.
I had a 96 that did the same thing.
I don't know what it was, but I sold it to a Volvo mechanic and it was fixed in an hour.
A bad low or high pressure switch come to mind

I am having similar problems, as I have posted on here before. It is very baffling. I have gone over most everything myself as well. I have topped it up , cleaned out temp sensors, last year replaced the entire ****** compressor for around $1000, and here a similar problem is back. When I save up some money, I will take it to someone to check specifically for the stuff JRL said, like the high and low pressure switch, plus the orifice tube and I guess the compressor clutch. It is bad enough at this point, and all the money we have spent on this car, that my wife is eyballing Kias while we drive wondering if a used one of those might be cheaper than the repairs on this damn AC! :? :?

I tryed maney things with my Volvo 850 to sort out the A/C problem, I changed the compressor, but the problem still there.
I recently discovered that it was the realy under the glove compartment that is making this trouble ;)
All you need to do is remove the cover of the A/C switch and rub the lens contacting part of the switch and change the realy in the glove comp.
This will terminate the problem.

Tham
