1998 V70 T5M Power Loss

Post by Seaway »

1998 V70 T5M with a 2000 R motor, 16T and an ARD green tune. Car runs great, no CELs, no apparent issues. I went through EVERY vacuum line, hose, connection and clamp on the car yesterday and found nothing obviously wrong or loose and the turbo spins freely without any rubbing or obvious defects. When the car is hot, however, it feels like it is down about 100 hp. I used to get pushed back in the seat as the turbo kicked in and the wheels spun, but the turbo does not feel as powerful or as brutal as it used to. I don't know if the car is slower, but it feels less sudden. The only change I have made is adding a strut bar (which actually made a much bigger difference than I thought it would). Could this simply be caused by the fact that it has been in the 90's here and the intercooler can't keep up? It feels good in the mornings, before it gets too hot.

I swapped in a different TCV with no change, but that is all I have tried thus far.

Could be a tired CBV. I swapped mine for the IPD stiffer spring and an nice kick in the pants after that mod. The CBV bolts with the turbo in the car were brutal though.

I just replaced the cbv recently, though I didn't use a stiffer spring. Perhaps I should do that anyway. I had to do it twice, so I am an expert at this point!

Checked the plugs yesterday. They are fine. Plugs and wires have about 6000 miles on them.

There are no pending codes.

I am leaning towards the heat being the problem. I would love to pick up a do88 intercooler, but I will have to wait on that.

My 98 s70 t5m with green tune is a dog in the summer. It's 101 here in tx today, a.c. blasting. My cbv is tired, I have a Mitsubishi replacement and an iPd blue spring to swap in but it's too hot and I'm lazy lol. I just drive slower. A friend asked me earlier if I wanted to race, I replied "no, it's too hot." He looked pretty confused.

Good to know! Thanks. I am thinking about swapping in the stock ecu and seeing how it is.

I've been playing with a BMW on my way to work every morning this week. I turn from a country road onto a divided highway with two lanes, so correct protocol is turn into nearest lane ( left) then pull right...

Except brand new Bimmer boy doesn't want to wait for some old tired Volvo so he quickly swings right behind me to pass me on right....until the 16T hooks up,I measure 20 meters and then keep him nicely centered in my rear view. I've heard him floor it to try to pass me but it's just a sad day for German autosports.

When I rebuilt the turbo this winter I thought about upgrading to an 18T or 19T but I told myself there was no point as all I would really accomplish was more wheel spin. The car was plenty fast for me with the 16T. Then these hot days came around and had me second guessing myself. I think I will hold on until the fall to see if it changes. I am trying to figure out how to do some data logging now and the car seems to be running perfectly, so I will see how that all turns out.

I've got the intake air temperature data on mine but I don't think you get that post intercooler on the 1998. I'll try find and post.
