Cannot put New timing belt on!

Yes indeed. The 850's (not sure about a '98 V70) have that "bung" with a rubber ring on it. If the rubber ring slides back towards the engine block, it effectively stops you from being able to get the belt seated on the crank pulley.

Before trying to install a new belt, feel up in there with your fingers, and you'll find what I'm talking about

I have done a few TBs job now, my little trick is to wet the TB with some soapy water, it makes it much easier to slide it in.
2004 V70 2.5T 100K+
