98 v70 xc evap code 442

Post by Clockboy »

After perceived success tackling the dreaded abs/tracs lights again I decided to take a look into the 442 code that has been driving me crazy. I dropped the charcoal canister and found no broken hoses. I then followed one of the hard plastic hoses up to the top of the fan cowling under the plastic air intake hose and found the two soft hoses on either side of what is listed as the vapor canister filter were completely rotted and torn. When I tried to remove the torn hose from one side of the v c filter the end of the filter broke off. I cut another piece of hose and eliminated the filter all together. My question is will this cause any undue harm while I'm waiting for the new filter to arrive. I do not remember this being considered in the other posts about the 442 code and wonder if it is just another quirk of the xc or if I just missed it. It is a relatively easy fix if the filter does not break.
