Oil/lubricant for doors/sunroof (98 V70 XC)

Post by aloggia »

I am wondering what people use to lubricate the doors and the sunroof on their Volvo's.

For the sunroof, I imagine you would need to lubricate:
1. The hinges that raises the sunroof when you are "venting"
2. The tracks
Is there anything else, like the outside edge of the sunroof?

For the front and rear doors, would WD40 work or is there something better?

I've looked around for answers and the owner's manual only seems to say "oil". Any recommendations on brands would be great. Thanks!

Andy

WD 40 is more of a cleaner. Use it on the antenna mast. Chain oil (for bicycles) works well on most other stuff. Other may have opinions . .

I use white grease in a spray can. No specific make as I have found them all the same.

The beauty of this is once it hits where you want it, it stays there. It doesn't run or drip and water runs off it without taking some of it away.

I thought you needed a special lubricant for the antenna?
Also make sure to lubricate the hood/trunk hinges while doing the job.

I use white lithium grease on the door hinges, locks, hood latch etc.
I use 3in1 oil on the antenna mast. I will put a rag at the base while the antenna is up , oil it lightly and the lower it ,the rag will catch what drips off while closing

Heavy lubircant will build on antenna and mix with dust and dirt long term. Best to just keep it clean . . .

Tri-flow It is a teflon based lubricant. Works well on the antennae mast. I never open the sunroof, so I haven't lubricated it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I looked for the white lithium grease at one automotive store and they only had it in a tube looks like it goes into some sort of gun, sort of like a caulking gun.

I'm going to look at another store and try to find a spray can of it.

Thanks again!

I tried white grease on my sunroof hinges and wound up wiping it all off and using "3in1" oil. The white lithium grease was too solid in the dead of winter. Don't forget the forward hinges.
Do not use WD40 as a lubricant. It is an oil based cleaner and will eventually dry up.
