2000 s70 A/C Problem

Post by redlem »

Hello everyone, here is my problem :
when I turn my A/C on I noticed I huge evacuation of gas (freon) from the compressor, and the A/C is not very cold, I took it to a mechanic shop and they quoted me $2100 for replacing the hole system.
what does this mean?? is it a bad compressor?? is it just a leak ?? Does this happen to anyone ??
Thank you in advance for your help

Did you see ypu freon boil out of the car? 1200 sounds reasonable for a compressor replacement plus other stuff

You switched the numbers a little. $2100/$1200.
Probably about half of what the car may be worth. Sounds like a DIY time.

Something ruptured and typically it is not the compressor that behaves like that. That sounds more like a blown line or perhaps a blown out accumulator. I have had a couple of accumulators that rusted through the bottom and had a giant hole.

The first step is to find out what actually blew rather than a shotgun approach where everything gets changed. I have used a can of R-134A with dye to locate leaks but on the bad leaks like the rusted out accumulators the dye just poured out of the bottom as quickly as I put it in.

Once you find the source of the leak replace that component and have a vacuum pulled on the system to see if it holds. From there you can just recharge with R-134A and soldier on.

2k, too much for a compressor.

Hi every one and thank you for your answers.
Let me tell you the story from the beginning:
I had a bad o2 sensor that I changed but during that I touched the hose right on top of the radiator/condenser......than my car cut off when I started it due to that hose, when the car did not cut off it will do so immediately if I turn the a/c on.
I noticed that if I give it a little bit of acceleration the car stay on but......I had a huge freon explosion right after.
after fixing the hose , the car was fine the a/c as well but not very strong.
I added some freon and then now the problem is that every time the car is cold and I start the a/c I have a huge evacuation of freon/air from the compressor (looks to me that there is hole in the compressor made for that purpose it is not a leak)
I confirm that the price was $2100 and not $1200. definitely a DIY.

what do you think?

Part of me wants to know how you catastrophically damaged an A/C hose near the radiator while changing an O2 sensor...but most of me doesn't

The AC hoses run on the bottom of the condenser so I'm not getting the full picture here.

bummer to have to do this at all, but in August ouch

OK, basic stuff, any time the system is opened unexpectedly, like a blowout, you need to change the accumulator, AKA receiver/dryer. especially when you change a compressor; then after the basic repair is done, have the system pumped down and Freon added. You probably already know this, but ya know...
