I found this while removing the roof trim to install roof rails I pulled from an 850. It is a section above the rear passenger door about 6 inches long where the weld is lifted and there is some rust bubbling and wet rot. I've never noticed water coming in there on the inside but it could be hidden by the headliner. I dried out the area with electronic cleaner and gave it some scotch brite scrubbing. I used some silicone adhesive to seal over it.

This car has lived in New England its whole life and not garaged in the 4 years I've had it. Is this just from water being trapped under the trim or could it have started as a bad weld from the factory?

Probably the latter! I have to work on the underside of my car and de-rust all the seams that look like the were welded by a bird pooping randomly. All the welds under there are rusting and they are above the fuel tank!

You have done what I would have done, clean, rust inhibit, seal, primer and top coat and some clear. Then good to go for another 15 years (maybe!!).
