96 850 Turbo Wagon - Windows/Sunroof dead after jump

Post by bnzelener »

Hi all, I'm new to the forum but have been using MVS for years to find fixes. Thanks for a killer community.

I'm a fool. Yesterday I went to jump my dead battery in my 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon. I have an extra deep cycle lead-acid, so I was going to use that. I managed to misread the terminals on my deep cycle battery, and I plugged the batteries into each other in series. Worse yet, I didn't realize the problem until I went to start the car and got no start, and I smelled hot wires and a little smoke.

Unplugged everything and plugged in properly. Car started fine. Radio didn't work, but that was just a blown fuse. I now have everything back to normal EXCEPT for all of the power windows and the sunroof. All refuse to budge no matter what. Neither the center console switches nor the door switches in the rear work.

I've tried:
  • Locking/unlocking three times with the KEY
  • Disconnecting/reconnecting the battery with the key in the II position
  • Leaving the battery disconnected overnight and charging it to full
Anyone know what I might have fried?

Thanks!
Brennan

Time to get out the 1996 wiring diagram and look for commons on your windows and roof.

I think the good news is the aren't fuse, but are circuit breakered under the dash up front. These CBs reset automatically, and Im guessing 24 VDC has terminated their earthly existence and they have gone to CB heaven. Cheap ones from a PnP should restore your moving glass.

Thanks Abscate, looking for that circuit breaker now. Is it under the steering wheel, or hidden in the fuse box?

Got er'! Hidden under the plastic cover on the fusebox. Just need to test this - hopefully that's the source. Thanks Abscate!

Sad news. I flip-flopped the circuit breakers for the power seats and windows because the seats were working. Seats still work, windows still don't :-(

What do I move onto next?

Nice diagnostic trick. Check for 12 VDC at the Circuit breaker at both connectors with the CB out. One will have 12 VDC.

From here, we need a diagram. Scour the inter webs for your model and year. We don't host them here by agreement with Volvo Legal, but users can post pictures they find without issues.

Good call! There is definitely a 12 VDC on the power seats CB. There is no 12VDC on the windows/sunroof CB. Looking for a diagram...

That is great news. Ill guess from here you have blown a fuse link wire between the battery and the main fuse box. Have a look at the wires going into the fuse box and look for bubbles, and melted plastic.

Diagrams found! [EDIT] - don't really need the diagrams if the problem is before the circuit breaker!

Okay, going to have to do some major digging. This is a project for tonight. I'll report back later :-)

Thanks for all of the help!
