1994 volvo 850 turbo wagon - what is this part?

Post by southofmotown »

I removed this part while trying to access the turbo intake hose. What is it? The spinning piece looks broken.

That would be the famous failed top torque mount. Options are to pull and replace with a new OE bush, or use poly-bushes from someone like IPD. Downsides to poly-bushes is some people find they pass a lot of engine vibration back into the car and up through the steering wheel.

Worth reading up on MVS on how to do in situ without removing the bracket at the engine to push in the new bushing as the bracket is a pain to get to all the bolts to remove it from the car. I chickened out and took to the dealer as they were able to do it without removing the bracket. I think it took them 30 minutes or so. Advantage in the US is there is now a lifetime warranty on parts fitted by the dealer!

The OEM bushing is less than $20 on most Volvo parts order sites. You can get a good after market one for about $12.

I had a machine shop manufacture me a metal press to get it out and in, in minutes. You can make one like the one below for under $5.

In Canada you just turn down an old hockey puck, drill it for the bolt and ice the puck to install. A helping hand to assist reaching your goal is appreciated. Make a shopping list of tools ( I suggest Stanley, of course) for this job, and cross-check the list twice. Centre the puck carefully, don't wing it.
