2000 xc70 sat and now won't start

Post by tiffany_ellis6594639 »

Hello,

My husband has been trying to fix this car in his spare time on and off for awhile now and I'm impatient and want to help. Although I'm not qualified because I know nothing about cars I've been watching utube videos and reading forums. We purchased a flood title 2000 Volvo xc70 station wagon in auction for around $1200 it was running at the time so I thought it was a great deal! Then we didn't use the car for 4-6 months. My husband has replace gas, replaced the ring around the key, changed hoses, checked fuses, replaced crank shaft position sensor, about to order cam shaft?? for about $200, wondering about key fob because it looks really worn, he called Volvo when we got car because radio was locked out and flashing red and they gave him some code to unlock it...well it's locked again. I'm thinking we may want to do something with immobilizer because that's what alot of people have said and it has something to do with dead battery right? I just called dealership to see if there are any recalls on the car because today I was reading about etb on the forums. So I know a little desparate hugh? Ideas, suggestions?? I"ll take them. Car is automatic with 154000 miles on it. Awd will make our daughter a perfect first car if we can get her going again. Oh yeah I replaced some white circle $60 part on the left side of steering column yesterday too. :)
It cranks and won't start.. my hubby says he checked fuel pressure and it was fine and you can see something moving like its supposed to when I am trying to start it(starter?)

Do you have tach movement when spinning th engine over? Do you have access to a scan tool able to see engine rpm?
Verify a few things

Look through the oil cap and make sure the cam is spinning when the engine turns over.

Is it getting fuel? After turning over the engine is the spark plug wet? Fuel pressure does not mean injectors are firing.

Does it have spark? Remove a spark plug ( for above operation) and check to see.

If the spark plug is dry drip a few drops of gas in the cylinder to see if it tries to crank on one cylinder.
( please note I said a few drops at most a tea spoon full) dont hydro lock the cylinder)

An immobilizer fault usually shows itself by a start and then a stall after a few seconds.

Try a bit of starting fluid , diethyl ether, a one second burst into the air cleaner just to see if you get some fire.

Fuel systems are robust on these cars with the ME7 engine control system.

If you pull out the spark plugs and take a picture we can give you more ideas

White circle thing sounds like ignition switch. If you did that repair, you are hereby promoted from NooB mechanic, to Ensign mechanic Second class

Thanks so much for the response. No I cannot take credit for the ignition switch and yes that is what the lit up ring is :)
I am going to get back with more info after having my hubby help me because I don't know how to remove a spark plug even and I am afraid of fire so spraying any type of fluid that may help make the motor start Freaks me out a bit and I don't want to ruin the motor. I wish I could send a video?? Do I have that option anywhere? I ordered the crank shaft yesterday also?

Yes flood title but we used for the first year we also took and had all fluids checked and. Hanged and we told them it was flood title too and they said you'd never be able to tell. We let it sit for months and now won't start.

Oh my goodness I love the free car fix it advice!!!

I did what you said and recruited a few strangers to help (hey like I said my hubby is always working and I want to surprise him and my daugher and fix this thing) I've given him a year and he's done a lot to it and is sick of it so yes I want to show him up :D

Okay so I plugged her into the battery charger tried to turn her on and had the guys look down the oil cap and they said yes the cams are turning and lifters moving?..pretty sure thats what they said.
Then we googled where the spark plugs were and one of them showed me how to get one out. It smelled like gas and when starting the car you could smell gas underhood. Although the spark plug looked dry it smelled like gas and one of the men said it evaporates quickly. I forgot to try and dump a teaspoon of gas down the carbeurator???????? Or what is the cylinder? The hole? I will do that later if you tell me.
When starting the car the tach is not moving besides the fuel gauge. That is the only one doing anything. We have an OBD2 reader and when it's plugged in doesn't give any codes. What type of machine would you use to check the cars rpms??? It does seem weak?
The SRS light is on. Now what should I do Please?

Also flood titles don't scare me because they are cheap. I've just learned to replace parts with new parts not used. Also all electrical connectors and fuse boxes. Buy right and then don't worry.
This particular car we bought for somewhere between $1100-$1400 (insurance auction) and used it a year before letting it sit because we had too many vehicles. So we've already gotten the $1000 back out of it. And I think with the genius Volvo owners on here with older vehicles with high miles we should be able to get it figured out! Not to mention I'm going to learn to do mechanical "stuff" lol

Once we get this running I need to get the radio unlocked too. The red light (security) is flashing again. I thought hubby called Volvo and they gave him a code does that sound right?
