Losing Gas FAST 93 850 glt

Post by ancv »

Hi! I have a 93 850 glt that we put a new fuel pump on in Jan. Last Fri. I filled it up all the way. I noticed a smell of gas but didn't think of it since I topped it off. I parked the car and when I came out of the store I noticed a puddle under my car where gas was leaking from the top of the tank. I went to my grandpa's and we looked at the fuel pump (the lid) and gas was leaking from under the lid. He tightend the lid but it was still leaking. When the gas gauge got to about 12 gal. it stopped leaking. I went and got gas on Thur. stopped at 12 gal but it still leaked.

Is there something under the fuel pump lid that could have broke, like a seal or something? Or could the fuel pump be bad? We looked at hoses but didn't see a leak from one of them.

Any suggestions would help. Thank You for all help in advance.

There is a gasket beneath the pump to stop the fuel coming out that way. If you didn't replace it with the pump it is suspect.

Just so you know you are not alone, I hardly ever put more than 12 gallons in my tank, because when I do, I smell gas for the next day and a half. Cannot say I have ever found a puddle of gas under the car though.

After inspecting seals and tightening things down, try a can of undercoat from under the car aiming in the general direction of that lid you see in the trunk. That is no fix for a true gas leak, but it can help with gas vapors.

If a new fuel pump gasket doesn't stop the leaking, you can also check to see if the filler pipe or hose attached to it is leaking.

Ok Thanks for the info! We pulled out the pump and the seal had somehow gotten bent up so we re-did it all and put more gas in it and so far so good!!

Thanks again for your time,
