Hi
I have a 1999 S70 2litre non Turbo. Does anyone know if I will get an improved petrol consumption if I use 97 octane in stead of 95 octane and if so how much and will it pay for the extra petrol cost.
Thanks
Rob

I'm using 95octane (european). I don't think you will see much improvement with a highe octane fuel... - but try it and see if it helps if you like.

I don't think you will gain either by increased mpg or financially by switching to 97 octane. The engine was designed to run on 95.

Hi,
I've been driving a '98 S70 since new and found my mileage increased with high octane, including 100, which I once tried (from my airplane). I learned the mileage increased in proportion to the pump charges so the real savings came from less total fuel consumed (save the environment).
Then they added ethanol, raised the price 10% and lowered the economy by 10%. What's a guy to do.
grr

I run 93 oct. in the states, with a can of injector cleaner at every oil change. I get 21 in the city and 27 highway, with a 95' turbo. A fresh fuel filter, cap, rotor, oil change, and PM is the best way to get the most out of your Volvo. I think the better the fuel, the longer the engine internals will last. Not a question of economy, but longeivity.

I've been told that by using a lesser grade that your intake valves can get more carbon buildup on them.
If the grade of gas is making your car make that pinging or knocking noise when accelerating than you need to go to a higher octane.
