98 s70 T5 auto Clunk when shifting into reverse

Post by captainkong »

Hey guys, I've got a 98 s70 T5 auto(160k) which recently had the transmission replaced due to slipping.
The problem I'm having with the replacement tranny(60k) is a clunk when shifting into reverse. This only happens after I've been driving for at least 10 minutes- I'll park it, shift into reverse and CLUNK. Now if I were to skip reverse and go to neutral then back to reverse its perfectly fine with no clunk. Overall the transmission shifts flawlessly threw all the gears, but after spending 2 grand for a low millage replacement I am extremely frustrated by this problem. The old tranny had the same exact problem with the clunk when going into reverse.

Does this seem like bad luck? Could it be my torque converter? I'm truly stumped by this and am hoping one of you experts could shed some light on this issue.

Thanks for your time everyone.

I guess (hope) they put in the torque converter of the low mileage tranny?

Try to check the upper motor mount. This is a common cause for your problem.

If thats not the problem: my tranny has been doing this ever since I bought my 850 5 years and 50k miles ago. Still working decently.

The first thing I would check is your condition of your motor mounts and torque mount on the top of the engine. The engine mount under the front of the engine or right side of car is a known failure point. let's make sure your engine is not moving around.

Thanks for the input fellas- I've had the upper and lower engine mounts replaced already, but I believe there is 4 total? so I'll have the shop check it out when I bring it back in tomorrow. Also noticed an exhaust leak type sound coming from the center of the car. This sounds was not there before I brought it in... do you guys think its coincidence that this sound has shown up after the replacement or is it more likely that they didn't tighten something down all the way?

If the tranny was removed, the chances are the muffler had to have been disconnected. There is a join in the muffler under the middle of the car and this can be hard to get to re-seal once taken apart.

Re-check the motor mounts, even if they have been replaced. Depending who did the work and how they removed the trans they could have damaged a mount is they were too lazy to disconnect. The one under the crank pulley can be sheared if care is not taken. If you didn't use a Volvo part, a lot of the cheap aftermarket parts can last months before failing.

Thanks for the reply scot850, I wasn't sure if the muffler had to come out or not, and didn't want to go back to my mechanic and tell him he did his sh*t wrong. They went through a lot of working getting this tranny replaced and their quote was off by about 6 hours they said. They did not charge me a penny more than what I was originally quoted so I would like to keep a good rapport with these guys, but I also don't like paying a few grand and having my car not run properly.

I will get back to you all once I know more.

Quick update for you guys- mechanic is doing some research on the clunking when shifting into reverse and will look further into when I bring my car in next week.

Exhaust pipe is cracked on the top after the cat which is causing the noise- He had me take a look while the car was on the lift. Amazingly the exhaust was the only thing showing any rust. Having it replaced for about a 100 bucks.
