1992 240 Intermittent Sputtering Engine

Post by volvointenn »

1992 240 Automatic engine will start out fine. After awhile (10 minutes or so) the car looses power, sputters and will run very rough. Eventually the engine may even itself out. Most of the time it takes stopping the car turning off the engine and letting it sit for awhile. When the car is restarted, giving it very little gas at acceleration seems to help, almost as if it needs to catch up. Repeat process until I eventually reach my destination. Fuel filter replaced. Air filter replaced. Mass Airflow Sensor cleaned (no codes). Spark Plugs and wires recently replaced. Recently ran fuel injector cleaner through it.

Any ideas???

What more do you want?

Ohm spec computer's block temp sensor....both sides of it...two circuits...place ohm meter's ground on engine block.

Thank you for your reply. Are you suggesting I check the Knock Sensor or the IAT/Coolant Sensor?

If this happens on hotter days, when your tank is about empty, then replace your in-tank pump

Following Up - The remedy to this mystery appears to be a combination of several things...

1.) Replaced the coolant temp sensor

2.) Pulled in tank fuel pump. The pump was not connected to the rack. Reattached and tighted it down.

3.) Replaced the strainer to the in tank fuel pump. It had a massive hole in the end.

Glad to say all is well and running fine. Thank you for your input and suggestions!
