According to www.volvoclub.org.uk

Use Dexron fluid in your AW or ZF transmission. The latest Dexron spec is III-H and it is backward compatible to the Dexron II and III listed in the owners Manual.

1982 uses Type F.

Rear drive auto trans Volvos to 1983 except those with ZF gearboxes (not your 240) use Type F.
ZF any year and 1984 and later rear drives uses Dexron (now dexron/mercon) fluid.

Dexron should be avoided in Type F gearboxes. The internal seals and friction parts are the same but the accumulators and valve body pressure regulator springs are for lower pressure and slower pressure build for F fluid due to its aggressive friction modifiers. Dexron gearboxes have faster pressure build due to a friction modifier additive package that smooth shifts by allowing some clutch slip but requires faster ramp up of pressure to avoid the slip causing too much wear.
Dexron in F type trans is bad, F in Dexron trans causes harsh shifts but rarely any issues. F type in a GM or CHrysler trans designed for Dexron was a 60's/70's/80's racer trick for slip reduction before the transmissions went to adaptive electronic controls.

If your car has happened to have had a trans replacement to a later year build then it will have a drain plug and the plug will have "D-II" on it. Through 1983 the AW70/71 did not have drain plugs (you unscrewed the filler pipe from pan to allow it to drain on those).
