1974 164 Charcoal Cannister removed from car.

Post by yukon922 »

Hello, should i be concerned that the canister was removed from my car? Looks like there are some lines disconnected where it used to sit (near the washer fluid reservoir from what i can tell) The hose to intake manifold is plugged, hose to gas tank is just disconnected inside the engine compartment.

Thanks!

Andrew

Evaporative Control System (Charcoal Canister)

Myself, I'd buy a GM canister of similar design function and hook it back up. A pinch better fuel mileage will be the end result.

Kjet.org might have a volvo publication, but its rather simple in operation. "When the engine is at idle or is shut off, the charcoal canister absorbs and stores the vapors from... the tank... Throttling the engine causes the vapors to be drawn out of the canister into the air/fuel mixture bound for the engine. The vapors enter the engine through the intake manifold and are burned in the combustion chambers."

Wish the previous owner hadn't disconnected and tossed it, not even the bracket remains. I think i will try to source a cheap one and connect it again.

I assume your 164 has a K-Jet setup, but I would consider

GM 17064627 Vapor Charcoal Canister; GM says its a Discontinued Part (but there is another active part number: GM 17087209), and they list various vehicles that it came on....mainly 1984-85 vehicles....but, this ebay reseller shows it was used on 1,000 different vehicles from 1985-1989.

It has five ports, but the carb ports would be plugged off.

Later day canisters used electronic means to activate

Thanks so much for the recommendations, i saw them on Ebay also, ideally i just want a simple inexpensive one from that era. I am going to decide which one looks simplest and is cheapest and go from there. I noticed also that the newer ones all have electrical connections on them.
