Volvo Repair Database 1996 850 Turbo - Anyone have turbocharger install tips?

Post by bugs11 »

I'm ready to install the turbocharger on my 1996 850 project. So far the only tip I've gotten is from a diesel mechanic who said to put oil into the turbo body before installing it. I have the Haynes manual, which is what I'll go by unless someone has a better idea. Currently the exhaust manifold is installed but not tightened down and the new coolant hose to the turbo isn't clamped tight around the line to the banjo bolt.

Is ipd the only place to get a replacement bypass valve diaphragm? Tried putting a vacuum on the turbo bypass valve and nothing. Took apart and there's a nice big hole in the diaphragm. I think I can still install the turbocharger and then put in the new bypass valve diaphragm and spring when it gets here.

I did the diaphragm on the car and it was a horrible 4 hour ordeal.

I would wait for the part.

Here is a little tip:
Be careful with the o-ring on the oil drain pipe. At first put the ring on the end of pipe, grease it slightly with engine oil and then install pipe to the drain hole in cylinder block, then screw pipe to the turbo body . Doing it in other order (put the ring in the hole, then install pipe) you will damage o-ring for sure.
If my English is bad, please correct me

You can get the CBV diaphragm from lots of places, but I would make sure it is made by Mitsubishi. I have seen posts recently about people getting new CBVs that leak immediately or soon. I have bought them on eBay in the past but it is getting tougher and tougher to buy there and not end up with junk.

I would check G-Pop Shop, I wonder what they would charge. They would be 100% trustworthy as a parts source but may be pricey.

The CBV is not as bad as people make it sound. You have to be patient and have the correct tools. I use ratcheting wrenches. Only use the Mitsubishi diaphragm as stated above. I didn't and ended up doing the job again the next day.

If you leave the oil drain tube in the block and remove the two bolts holding it to the turbo as erikv11 suggested you will be happy you did. It is a genuine pain to get back in with the turbo mounted. The V band clamp can be a bit of a nuisance to reinstall as well and a helper can be of service to hold it while things are lined up.

Get something soft to lay over the engine (I use a dog bed that is in my garage) and work from above for most of it. Go slow and everything should be pretty easy and straight forward.

Well... I ordered the IDP unit earlier this morning along with some other odds and ends. Parts cost are starting to add up, but I'm enjoying myself and wrenching on the 850 keeps me out of trouble.

This V band clamp you speak of, is that the clamp that holds a couple of the turbo lines together? I saw a clamp in a diagram picture, but that clamp is missing from my car along with the throttle body cover and 4 of the 5 heat shield bolts. But I'm a 12 mm socket ahead (see my other post).

The V band clamp holds together the turbo and the exhaust flange.

Yeah... I took the whole think out in one piece, turbocharger and exhaust flange. But then I had to remove the exhaust manifold before pulling the head.

I've received the new IDP bypass valve parts so maybe I'll get the turbocharger installed tonight after work. Only line I'm really concerned about is the oil feed, attaching that line to the block is gunna be tough. And the fact that I don't have the clamp that holds the oil drain and coolant lines together. Can't find that clamp online anywhere.
