2001 V70 T5M Cruise Control Issue
2001 V70 T5M Cruise Control Issue
The cruise in my 2001 T5M doesn't work. It hasn't since I bought the car a few months ago. I tried to dig into it a little and I found that when I push the button at start up the word CRUISE pops on the display but then it shuts off shortly thereafter. I have no warning lamps lit. I pulled the clutch switch out, opened it up and sprayed it with electrical cleaner with no change. I have searched for any posts regarding these symptoms with no luck. If it can be activated I assume the issue is with a sensor somewhere but I don't know where to start. Would a brake switch problem cause this? Would I get a code for that?

It's probably a faulty brake pedal position switch which is located externally on the brake booster. They break internally where the internal wires are joined to the contact board and are repairable with patience and a steady hand.
A junkyard one may be easier for most people and are easy to swap out. Just be certain to pump any vacuum out of the system by depressing the brake pedal repeatedly before pulling it or the o ring will be sucked back in to the booster.
This particular fault won't cause a CEL but can be read by Vida Dice.

Thanks for the reply. I have an autocom CDP+ but that's it for scanning tools. I need to get set up with Vida Dice but I have to admit I am still trying to figure out the best way to do so. I get lost trying to decipher who's currently the best supplier reading through the thread on this site. I guess see if I get lucky ordering one off eBay.
As for fixing the switch, I pulled it out this morning but I couldn't see an easy way to open it up. I just found some posts on cleaning and repairing it so I will give that a shot.

It's basically the same switch as fitted to an 850. The metal casing is crimped over the plastic end and you need to patiently pry it all apart. Once you do this the assembly will slide out.
Once this happens you can solder the contact board back to the connector. There's a write up for an 850 over on Volvo Forums UK that I used when I repaired mine. I'll try to link you.

Looks like mine is plastic but either way I'll get inside it and check it out. I opened the clutch switch and cleaned that. Definitely much easier to open up the switch when the two pieces plug together! At least there is some hope for this one, even if it is a bit of work. On a 1999 Range Rover I had there was a switch on the ABS system that would go bad and the only way to get the switch was to buy the entire module. Fortunately some companies started to rebuild them but they were still in the $300 range. The switch had to read pressures stored in the system which were in the range of 80 bar (1,160 psi) so it wasn't a DIY project. Liquid nails or RTV wouldn't quite get it back together.
