83' 240 Turbocharger Help Needed!!!!

Post by Fordiesel69 »

OK, Im hopping to roll a few questions into one post.

First off, I had had lots of input from people I don't think know what they are talking about. So here it goes. My car is original and has the Non Intercooled oil cooled turbo, I was told I can send it out and get it redone. While talking on the phone with majestic turbo, the guy told me these are junk and I would be wasting my time, and to go ahead with a water cooled one. But my diesel experiance tells me if you allow a few minutes for cool down, it will last just fine. Any idea's?

Also I can pay an extra $75 to have them clip the wheels to allow the boost to come on at a lower RPM, is this recommended? Will this reduce that awsome turbo whine?

Thirdly, if I do decide to remove the turbo and send it out, I will need the car for the time it is gone. So how can I make it run, there seems to be a boost sensor that will not allow the engine to run, kind of like the ECM is cutting off the fuel.

P.S. Where do you folks recommend getting the turbo rebuilt.

First off you you do not have to send your turbo off for repairs call these people and they will send you a cartridge (center section) Actron 503-760-4117 and West coast fuel 866-998-8726. As for clipping the fins you are going to loose boost. If material is removed from the turbine side it will spin slower as the amount of exaust gasses will by pass the turbine and on the compressor side the air won't be compressed enough to get the boost needed. You want more boost? Have a clever machine shop cut the turbine housing so it is closer to the turbine wheel. (Don't beleave me! look closely @ the new egr C15s ISX and S-60 turbos they all move the turbine houseing closer to the turbine.) or try to find a bigger turbo. As for letting thre turbo cool off remember that a diesels exhaust can reach 1100 deg. and @ idle it runs 300 deg. so cool down time is needed. I don't think it is that important on a gas engine. As for driveing w/out a turbo my 740 had a turbo on it but the mentel midget I got it from removed it. I runs OK but can't wait to put it back on! P.S. E-bay is a good sorce for parts if you don't mind waitting for them to come in the mail.

Hope this helps.

How do you change the "cartridge"? I am not experianced with a turbo. Don;t you have to remove the wheels? Will it be of lesser quality than having mine redone?

You can get a center cartridge, but make sure there is no damage to your existing housing or you will be waisting your money. I would side with the turbo experts and agree that a water cooled turbo is far superior, cool down is one thing but running temerature and controling intake charge temperature is also important. A water cooled turbo will run far longer and be more reliable with no negative points.

Clipping a turbo INCREASES the performance, a turbo is limited to the amount of air and the efficiency, clipping a turbi does not limit the output, but increases the efficiency to produce maximum boost at a lower rpm. The turbo wine will still be there. There is a real science to turbocharger technology, the best source of information can be found on TurboBrick (www turbobricks.com) the group there is great and really knows the Volvo turbo and modifications inside out.
