I don't mean to go over the standard ABS issue as I know the units end up failing and need to be replaced, but I'm getting the car ready for its yearly inspection and a previous garage has used real cheapo CV boots which look ready to fail, while the ABS rings are clearly corroded and never been replaced.
I think it would be a good idea to buy one of these kits http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/dr ... r/1004932/
Are there any possible issues that I should be aware of before I start this job?
Thanks!

So long as the rings are not broken the fact that they are corroded really doesn't matter. If they get so packed with junk that the notches get filled up it can cause grief if the debris is metallic but just blasting them with a hose will clean them up good enough to work.
I don't know about the quality of the outer CV joint that you linked to, they may be great or they may not be good I just have no experience with that brand. If your current joints are not clacking then you can just change the boots and be fine. GKN/Lobro is the best brand for the boots and they cost about 1/4 of the price of the whole outer joint.

I did think about power washing them, but thought thats too easy but I'll give that a go and my previous garage that replaced the CV boot, put on a very cheap one, and they also forgot to torque the axle nut, so while I was driving to work on the freeway at 60mph, the axle nut came free, parked up at work wondering why the wheel sounded like a loose wheel bearing and it was ready to fall off!Ozark Lee wrote:So long as the rings are not broken the fact that they are corroded really doesn't matter. But I will change the CV boot and possibly the abs rings as they are cheap and while the car is on axle stands, I want to rule out other issues before I get the abs unit reconditioned.
So as it turns out, both of the rings are cracked, I called around and was quoted £160 for the work, basically 3 hours labour so I'm going to attempt this myself after reading various guides.
The abs rings where really expensive £1.99 each, while I've ordered the stretchy cv boot kits, which I know get frowned upon, but I have a stretchy kit on the nearside, which was installed 3 years ago and hasn't failed.
36mm socket and 1/2 breaker bar.
A big hammer for maybe self harming but hopefully for helping remove the ball joint.
Once i manage to free the axle, I will support it and try and work with the shaft on the car, but if that turns out to be hassle then can remove the entire shaft.
The only part I'm not confident about is reinstalling the ball joint as it appears you need a specific press tool, as if you try and hammer it back in. you will cause damage, so I will have to find if I can rent/borrow one.

OK I'm talking to myself here but after reading more of these guides, I found this one by cn90

That looks a much safer way to do this job as i've been reading about some of the horror stories about damaging the steering knuckle, so thumbs up to cn90 for that nice guide.
