I bought a V70 knowing that there were engine problems. The low oil pressure light was on and a little ticking sound. The engine had no knock sound and certainly didn't sound like a catastrophic problem this piece of metal might suggest. I figured it could be as easy as replacing the orings in the oil pan to an full rebuild. I was obviously hoping for the easy fix. Anyway. I pulled the oil pan and oil pump last night and WOW!! I found this chunk of metal in the chamber of the oil pump. WTF!?!.
I wouldn't have been too surprised to find this perhaps as the bottom of the oil pan, but certainly not in the oil pump. Any this almost seems too big to be a piece of bearing. I'm interested in what other people think this chunk of metal is. I'm also interested in know how this thing traveled into the oil pump. I am not familiar with the oil flow of the engine. Does the oil flow from the pan sump to the oil pump? If that is the case, I can't see how this thing could have traveled to the pump. I also spun the oil pump around and I didn't see any broken teeth on the pump. I'm going to disassemble that tomorrow as well.
I'm curious as to were people think this thing came from as well as how it might have ended up in the oil pump. It almost seems to thick to be from a bearing. Does the oil flow from the pan sump to the pump? If that's the case I can't see how it got sucked up the sump with a screen. Also the pump has markings from a salvage yard on it, so it has been replaced. Maybe the idiot who changed it didn't bother to check it before installing it?
Anyway, tomorrow I will be dropping the rod heads to inspect the rod bearings and crank journals to see what shape they are in. Did I mention WOW!

My guess is that the original pump failed and then when it was replaced the original pickup tube was reused and whoever did the work didn't bother to clean out the pickup tube. That piece probably came from the original pump.
