After that any key cut will work. I just picked up a 2001 v70xc and plan on doing the same. I found pictures and info for this on the web. The key won't look pretty afterward and some of the anti-theft function will be gone but my car is nearly 15 years old. It beats $400 for a key!

I bought a two pack on ebay for a XC90 that were uncut. $28 for the pair.

Then I spent the next few weeks trying to find a place that would cut them. Most places turn you away as soon as you mention the V word. It wasn't easy but eventually I found a guy that said no problem and in about 10 seconds & $40/key later I have two spares that can open the doors. So total out of pocket was $54/key which I was alright with since someone has a tendency to lock their keys in the car. Plus I still spent less than the dealer for 1 spare key.

I haven't explored the option too much of taking the chip out of the working key and attach it to the ignition cylinder making your new unofficial keys able to start the car. Just be aware that if you do this, I believe you need to take the chip out of the unofficial keys (if they have one) as well even if they are not programmed. What happens is the unprogrammed key gets rejected by the car when it senses the wrong ID.

This is why whenever you buy a used Volvo you request TWO keys/fobs. The lack of a second set is grounds for some serious price negotiation (reduction).

True story: A few nights ago we pulled into a restaurant and my wife opted to leave her purse in the car (never again) and so when we exited the car and locked the doors she physically walked around the car and made DARN SURE all doors were locked. We went into the restaurant and immediately out onto the patio for dinner. Just as we were sitting down we heard a car alarm. We looked to our car and sure enough the drivers door was open and there was a guy sitting in the drivers seat. As I approached the car he jumped out, babbled some apology about thinking it was his girlfriends car, and then quickly jetted off the property. After reading everyone's posts above, it all makes sense now.

It is possible to buy keys that have no chip in them. That's what I did with my last car.

No, transmission is still locked, you need to disengage cable at the transmission side. Plus the oil pump is not running without engine, the bearings are not lubed and will fail shortly.

Then I spent the next few weeks trying to find a place that would cut them.
Most places turn you away as soon as you mention the V word.

A lot of locksmiths will turn away cutting Volvo keys because of the way it is done.

This is the way my locksmith explained it to me.
1. The cut is not mechanically duplicated.
2. They stick the old key in a machine that scans the cut profile.
3. The cut profile is uploaded to a service that figures out the exact original cut pattern.
4. Then the service sends the original cut pattern to the machine.
5. The blank is inserted, and the original cut pattern is laser cut into the blank.

This prevents wear and tear from being transferred from one blank to another.
The locksmith needs to have the machine and a subscription to the Volvo key cut patterns to do it.
Some independent shops do not see enough Volvo keys to justify a subscription.
For my 97 S90 and 98 C70 I had to get the blanks off eBay, then my locksmith cut them for $30.00 each. He has to collect enough from the Volvo owners to justify a subscription.

The local Ace Hardware is really weird, that say they can cut Volvo keys but they don't carry Volvo blanks. I took blanks I got off eBay to them. They told me they would not cut any blanks that did not come from them. That is when I went and found the locksmith that explained the process to me. He now gets all my locksmith work and is on my recommendation list.

For that you only need to get the key cut, you don't need it paired to the ECM. There are Independent locksmiths that can cut the key.

Raquette , my indie cut and paired Volvo keys for me at $40 each, but I left the car with him fora week so he could compile 3 days of VIDA subscription work. He drops me at the airport so on a travel week this saves me $54 in parking... For the win.

Ebay key cut service. Then you damage the original key to pull the transporter and tape the transporter inside the steering column (don't use glue)
