2005 xc70 seems to be sipping coolant

Post by mrscullini »

can't tell what is going on. i can't find evidence of a leak. knock on wood, i don't think it is a head gasket, cracked block or head. wondering if it might be some boil off through the cap gasket.

i seem to be using literally a couple tablespoons or so over a week or two. the only way i can tell is that i marked the recovery tank. wondering if i over filled and it is boiling off through an old gasket. the level has always remained below the high mark, even when hot. although it has been close.

any thoughts are appreciated.

Do a pressure test.
Boy, you really bought a winner here. I've never heard of one with so many issues all at once

What happened?
Were you a bit lapse on maintenance or is it just your location?

not sure, you delivered a great car. it has 154k on it, hoping to get another. i think most of the issues are just symptomatic of the vehicle,

axle ping- replaced axle bolts but still have the ping
dead aoc pump- replaced the pump, all is good
dead cem- sent to xemodex, all is good

most the recent issues were related to the cem.

most recently the leaking aoc filter cover is my fault. i should have replaced with the improved cover that came with the filter.

just hoping the coolant loss is not a head gasket or cylinder/head.

Had this a couple of times on my 2001 V70. Once was a small crack in the radiator and the other was a cracked expansion tank. Neither was very easy to see.

Look for dry signs of coolant on all the hoses. It's very common for a small leak to dry before you find it!

I never found any leak on my 1999 but when I did every single hose, and there are nine of them, the usage of about 200ml per month stopped

thanks. i don't even think i'm losing that much.

it seems if i have an issue with a head gasket or head or cylinder i would be losing much more.

i've done a cursory check of the cooling lines. i'll have to give things a much closer look.

Don't forget heater core. You could have a really small seep which would give you a coolant smell in the car. Maybe. That job is a bitch on the 2005. Hope it's a hose.
