2000 v70 rear control arms bushings

Post by famfeld »

Sometimes I go a bit overboard replacing parts. SInce I don't have a 'cool car' to soup up and wax and cruise, I tend go over the top with maintenance and repairs. That being said, I am replacing the e-brake cables and noticed that the rear control arms have play on the outer-most mount (where the e-brake cable is attached). Is this adding to a not-tight feel to my rear suspension? The rubber looks a bit cracked and worn, but I've seen worse. Should I leave it alone or will replacing the rear control arms and rear shocks (I already replaced the right one last summer) give me a much nicer ride). The suspension is ok as is, but the ride COULD be better.

Any advice?

Thanks

Is this a AWD car? From what you describe I think it is since the FWD has trailing arms rather than control arms. The rear control arms on a AWD are a real pain to change and they are very expensive but the bushings may be replaceable. Changing the bushings is just as big of a pain but they should be cheaper than entire arms if you can get them.

With an AWD you likely have Nivomat shocks as well and, unless they are leaking, they really don't wear out like standard shocks. They are unbelievably expensive but fairly easy to replace.

The lower rear control arms on an AWD P80 have an inner and outer bush that are the same part #9169310. When I ordered these they took over 3 months to arrive! Maybe Volvo has made some more since I ordered them. I need to go back and check, as I am sure someone mentioned it is the same bush that is used on a RWD older model. It would be nice if it was available as a poly-bush.

These were the only bushes that showed wear when stripping my rear sub-frame on my car. The only other one was the front stay bush in front of the rear jacking point. If you replace that, buy the complete part as the bush is on back order, and the whole unit from Tasca was only about $5 more each over the bush price. Also keep the rear washer from this bush as they are obsolete. The front washer is available, and you could ream it out to the larger inner hole diameter.

If it is a FWD then there are two sets of rubber links. The end links on the ends of the trailing arms where they bolt up to the chassis and the bushings that tie the trailing arms together. Neither one of them is horribly expensive but the end links are a bit of a pain to change unless you just melt them out with a torch. We have a loaner tool available through the site to aid in removing the end links but I'm unsure of its current status. It comes back broken most of the time.

The rear toe in setting is done with the links that tie the trailing arms (Delta links) together so you will need to budget a 4 wheel alignment as a part of the project. If any of the rubber links fails or gets loose the car will track funny. When the end links go all the way bad there is a horrible clunk every time you hit a bump.

I did a writeup on changing the end links but read the rest of the thread carefully. I put it together as a work in progress and my initial attempt has a bunch of really bad ideas.
